Good Day, In 1980 I bought a natural wood '67/615. Recently I replaced the electronics package and upon removing the pick guards to my surprise noticed black paint in the pores of the wood. Even in the slots below the pick-ups,the jack hole and the truss rod adjustment hole there is some black paint. Although professionally stripped with router and all, what intrigues me the most is what is written inside. "615 R". What does the "R" mean? Also notice the number "4" written in pencil below the "5". Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the forum! The codes and names you see inside the cavities don't denote a special model. They are simply markings used at the factory to identify what parts of the manufacturing process have been completed on the instrument.

Welcome to the forum. It appears your 615 may have originally been Jetglo (black), and has been refinished to a natural color.

I agree with Kris.
