1960 Rick 360

Post by NRZ4244 »

Hey guys, I'm new here and have been trying to figure out a way not to step on any toes too soon by starting a topic, but couldn't really find any way to introduce myself. Just posting some pics of my dad's Rickenbacker. He bought it back in '61 new and gigged with it for probably 15 years. It opened up for the Beatles, Sonny and Cher, etc. I love this guitar and really am not looking to sell it, but really want to learn about it, and most importantly find a place that can fix it up for me so that it will stay in good condition so that I can pass it down to my kids (I'm 21, so not for a long, long time). Anyways, here are some pics of it and if you have any info, I'd appreciate it. If not, I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Welcome to the forum! Nice looking guitar you've got there!

Posting pictures of your guitar is as good a way as any to introduce yourself. Don't worry too much about stepping on toes, most of us either have fast feet or wear thick boots...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Welcome to the Forum, Nicholas! What a superb first post!

Your Dad's Rickenbacker is a 360 Capri, one of the most sought after models. These were made between 1958 and 1961. I'd suggest yours was made in 1960.

It looks to be in very original condition, with the original case.

As far as fixing it up is concerned, what specifically needs doing? Many of us on the Forum can help out in this respect. If it were up to me, I wouldn't change a thing, particularly not the finish.

Wow, really nice!!

Like Darren said, I certainly wouldn't change the finish. Not just for personal reasons, but to retain the value of the guitar. And original Capri's are very valuable.

Welcome to the forum, BTW.

I definitely don't want to change anything. Mostly what I would want to have done would be to have the frets redressed (but only if that would not hurt the value of the guitar) along with other basic set up procedures. I just worry about it surviving for years to come. Honestly, I would drive this guitar 10 or 14 hours to a tech if I knew he was the guy for ricks.

I obviously don't play this guitar, its in retirement now so why ruin its time with my abuse? I have my dad's old 72 Electra 335 clone for that as well as my MIM strat (I know, not gear heaven, but its mine so its good for me). Anyways, if you guys know of someone who can do this work or have advice on what to do, I would appreciate it.

Nicholas,
Glad you made it hear. Looks like you & your family are well on the way to getting the 360 up and running again.
Best of luck.

Do you have any pics of your dad from back in the day playing it? I'd love to see some of those.

Regards,
-Robert

Welcome, Robert. I take it you and Nick are friends?

I know someone who can get your Capri up and running again, Nick. Look no further than our own Paul W. (aka Jingle_Jangle). He's actually lisenced to build Ric acoustic guitars and has restored tons of Rics that needed repairs, refins or anything in those categories. He's a nice and honest fellow and will give your Capri the work it needs. :) (Paul, I just spoke for you, man!)

actually I just met robert on Thegearpage forums. I had posted a similar post there, and he suggested this forum. I am glad he did because it seems like this is the place to be for rics. Anyways, I'm scanning some old pics of my dad gigging with the guitar, but you can't really see the guitar very well because he was on the other side of the stage; they are cool to look at though. Will get those up if anyone is interested.

Thanks Jake,
Actually I just stumbled across a post Nicholas made at The Gear Page this morning looking for info on his dad's guitar. I worked out the serial number & model for him, begged him not to sell the guitar (which he wasn't going to do anyway) and sent him here to find the right person to set it up for him.

I'm a long, long time Rickenbacker user but unfortunately over the years had to sell off what I had. Here are a couple of pics of my main gigging and recording Ricks/amps (Lord knows there were many others, I just don't have pics.)

Oh yeah....I will have a nice story about an unplayed 325V59 that just surfaced in our house Christmas morning.
But that's for later.

I dunno. Wouldn't hurt to clean it up a bit, but I think if I were in your position, I'd just leave it as-is, stick it in the case, and forget about it.

It is a lovely Capri, BTW.

Robert -- Loving the 1997! We never see too many in jetglo, so you've got a rarity there. I have one myself, but it's fireglo. It's my main guitar, I received it as a Christmas present from my family and I love it. It suits virtually everything I play and it's the best guitar I own. It's not leaving my arsenal for a while! Tell us the story about said 325 when you have a moment...

Welcome, Robert. While your Rick collection might be down a bit, still appears you have some nice ones left. Real nice. Glad you came along. And the story on the 325 goes...?

Stan & Jake...I wish I had the ones pictured left...I'm Rick-less. Those were the last ones I had left and they to are now gone. :(

But the memories....I've got the memories.

Now, where would you like the 325 story? This section, or the 325 section?

not sure if anyone is interested, but these are some of the only pics we have here. I guess they are doing a show at something like the go go club. Not sure and you can't really see the ric. My uncle may have some better pictures stashed somewhere too.
