I agree, good tone but his phrasing is a bit forced and overly repetitive. He does not play in the pocket enough yet to be a bona fide blues player IMO. Practise makes perfect though. We all have to start somewhere.

But his beard is very precisely-trimmed.

Erm stumbled across this bizarre Video today and i dont know what to make of it! Its all a bit kind of `Deliverance` of the Rickenbacker kind. Enjoy well kind of.......

Meaningless groove.

Hi everybody. Well, I'll fess up, that's me in the blues video. I was kind of shocked when I found this thread, to say the least. As a long time Rick fan and fairly recent owner, I was surprised by the few Rick videos on YouTube but not surprised by the ones that were there. I'm a fan of all of the classic "jangle" Rick music, among other styles, but that's not what or how I play. So I thought I would throw something a little different in the mix. Hopefully someone who's on the fence about getting a Rick and who's not into the usual Rick typecast music might catch my video and be inspired enough to take the plunge. Once the guitar is in their hands, all doubts will be erased. It was for me at least. Well, as the title says, I'm preachin' to the choir here. Thanks jimk.

I agree with you 100%. My phrasing, or lack of, bugs me a lot. The reason I post videos is more a practice aid to myself. All of my errors for all the world to see and hear forces me to try harder. Because of my job I can't woodshed as much as I like and I need to get out and collaborate with better musicians more often. If you watch a video I did about a year ago playing a Strat, I think my phrasing has improved since then. It has been the focus of my practicing along with note choice, rhythm. I don't claim to be a bona fide blues man, that's for sure. More of a joker of all trades

Hi David,

I have played the blues since I was a teenager in the very early 60's. It's tougher to play the blues than most people can imagine. When I made my observation it was of course relative to (a) this section of the forum: "It's The Blues Baby" and (b) to Jim's initial post praising the video. Being somewhat of a critic I gave my honest opinion. Notice though that I did say that practise makes perfect.

I was once where you are. You are currently trying different phrasings and trying to make them fit in odd places. A seasoned blues player stays in the groove, reads the pocket and places his phrasing just as a singer might. The subtle and deep bends along with the manner in which triads and modes are used keep the "voice" of the instrument interesting for the listener and add to the "feel" that is being conveyed. Playing the blues is all about feel at the end of the day.

You have the will and you seem to have the stick to it attitude. You will most certainly get there. Thank you for being so gracious about my review of your video.

Who in his right mind stores a RIC in a trailer where the door lock is a 1x6?

David, welcome to the forum.

David is not the only one surprised to see their video here, the "meaningless groove" is mine . . . and "Camp Noodle" is indeed a meaningless groove, thus the title of the vid.

I do a lot of offbeat stuff for sure, glad that some finds its way here.
