i remember a thread about this - i believe people had success using speaker magnets - but cannot locate that thread.

any help w/ a link to that thread - or advice written here would be much appreciated.

He has an actual pickup charger that sends major magnetic current through the horseshoes, and it definitely brings the pickups back to life. Most noticeably was my 1968 4001. The HS pickup was like a ghost. He charged the mags for about 45-60 seconds, and now the pickup is MUCH louder and balances more evenly with the toaster. AND I still have the .0047 cap in line.

Jimmy's done quite a few sets for me, and he definitely knows his stuff. Talk to him. Tell him Walker sent youse.

I use a samarium cobalt magnet I got out of an old IBM hard drive. You definitely have to watch polarity of the shoes when magnetizing, but leaving it on overnight takes a horseshoe that wouldn't stay on a vertical metal drawer front to hanging there just fine.

Speaking of magnets, if anyone wants to get some really strong magnets for remagnetizing or whatever, the strongest ones are NIB (Neodymium/Iron/Boron) rare earth magnets, sometimes called "super magnets". These are readily available for FREE!! Just find an old computer hard disk drive. These magnets are used in the disk head servo motor, usually there are 2 of them in a drive. Bigger (physical size) drives have bigger magnets since the heads have to move further.

Be careful with these magnets, some of them are dangerously strong. If 2 of them come together on say, the edge of your finger, they can actually remove some skin (don't ask how I know that ).

I recently tried to recharge my horseshoes by wraping them in wire and charging them via a dc source.
It worked well but they still lose it fairly quickly..

The stewart Macdonald magnets so far work the best that I have found..

Jason Lollar at Lollar Guitars knows a lot about horseshoe pickups and is quite good at gaussing the magnets. Give him a call if you need your magnets renewed.
