I thought he was always a P bass guy ? Occasional J bass?
At any rate that Ric is really cutting through in a good way .
Not that I disliked his tone w/ other basses, but that double Ric
assault really compliments their early style.

Ever since repurchasing murmur (this time the 2 disc reissue; very recommended), I've been
stuck in early R.E.M. mode. Again ....in a good way.

You cannot mistake REM for any other band. Even in their earliest work the sound is so developed.
Crowded House is another band that had their sound well developed on their first album.

The Rick bass sounds good without doubt, but Mike Mills seems to suit his P basses so well....

Not bad. A very classic Rickenbacker sound I think, guitar and bass.

See, I KNEW that a 4003 would sound very good with a pick.
Not for me, I wouldn't, but for that kind of song, that type of music, it really does compliment.

Bright and enunciated. Sometimes I "attack" sharply with thumb (slap or, well...thumb!) or with my index/middle finger
using greater impact for accent, and I can hear what a pick would produce.
So used exclusively, it would be very effective and musical, especially with a Ric...
as evidenced in this case by REM!

Most of the early REM stuff is Ric bass. His appears to be from around '71 or '72. I believe all of Murmur and Reckoning are that bass. Also, probably Chronic Town.

I agree. Most of their early stuff has a very Rickenbacker bass sound. Marc Seligman told me a story about meeting them at a gig before they struck it big. Mills played a JG 4001 at the time.
