If it's not one thing it's another...
I finally found tuners for my frying pan where the posts fit nicely in the headstock, but the screws to hold them in are too small. The screws from the original are too wide. Guess I have to try and drill the holes a little bigger. That's going to be tough.

Try to find a tap for the larger screw.
You might not need to drill.

Wait--you mean that you're going to have to drill the holes larger in the tuners, right? Because the original Rick screws won't fit through the holes in the new tuners, right?
This is what I get out of your post. I sometimes do the same thing--write something sorta technical, and then realize that , though it looked just fine to me, to anyone else it was a bit hieroglyphic...
If this is the case, then you don't need a tap, you need a drill bit, just as you thought.

I understand Paul. Yes, I need to make the screw holes just a tiny bit bigger. I may have the bit to do it too. Might try it tomorrow.

more aggravation.....I had no problem drilling the holes a bit bigger, but now the screws are giving me trouble going back into the headstock. A couple of screw heads broke off....I think vintage guitars and me just don't get along

Marc, they are not going in cross-thread are they? When I go back in with a wood screw and I think it is wrong, I go in reverse lightly until I feel it "drop" and then I know I have the correct threading to run it into.

Might be a problem John. I think the screws are just weak after 70 plus years..
