Re: This is the modern world
ITC = Raw live sound
AMC = Intellectual artistic studio band (strings etc.)
TITMW = We aren't sure what we are. One foot in both camps.
A lot of early fans hated the change after ITC and moved on. Most jumped on the band wagon after AMC, so TITMW gets lost in the shuffle.
That being TITMW is my favorite of the first three.

What kind of fool do you think I am?
There is nothing wrong with this album. I think the above post is spot on.
Similar to how everyone panned Sandinista, but it has some great songs on it.
I'd much rather listen to the worst Jam album than the best Van Halen or G&R album.

Re: This is the modern world
I love the song and the album. I listened to it last week several times over on a long drive. Still high on my playlist after all these years.

This was the album that got me into The Jam big time. It was then a joy to go back and discover their debut album 'In The City', and I've been a fan ever since.
Regardless of the usual critique, I actually like the production sound and tone of the album, and apart from a couple of duffers (London traffic and Don't Tell Them You're sane - sorry Bruce!) it's got some great tracks on there. There's also some superb pictures on the cover (Weller with black tape stuck onto the front of his sweater - we've all done it since!)
I also love some of the little soundbites between the tracks, but because we're now the single track download generation, you don't get those any more on albums. Shame.
It's a classic.
8/10.
Other scores for The Jam's studio albums.....
In the City - 8/10
All Mod Cons - 10/10
Setting Sons - 9/10
Sound Affects - 9/10
The Gift - 9/10

That back cover pic on the album is one of my favorite Rick pics ever. Go Bruce!

Re: This is the modern world
I always wondered why this album got so much abuse; there are some obvious clunkers, previously mentioned, but there also a lot of really cool songs as well. It's definitely a Jam album I like.

Wow, that's cool; that's the first time I've seen that video, and of course I gotta love that he's playing a red Vox teardrop XII; I think that's only the fourth one I've ever seen; Will Sergeant from Echo and the Bunnymen's, the two I've owned, and now this one.scotty wrote:Weller with a Vox

This and In The City where the first two albums i bought ,it's one of my favs.
Now ,i didn't buy them when they came out in 1977 ,as i was too young,i got them around 1981or so.
I loved that photo on the back, class.
Here Comes The Weekend and Life From A Window where my favs from Modern World,
but i pretty much like most of it.
