trc swappage

got bored / motivated this weekend to take pics of my basses, and had decided to try swapping out trc's on my 3 ricks. the motivation was i did not care for the black/raised gold letter trc on my cii. so i tried the white plexi off the v63 (did not care for it on the cii) and then the black plexi off my 74 4000. i really liked it (but would really love a gold plexi on there!) ,so then i tried the cii trc on the 4000,and i think it actually looks great on there. if i decide to change them,i will need to do some sanding for a better fit, what do ya'll think?

Somewhat related, I kind of want to get a black TRC and PG for my forthcoming 4003 MG (and S-ify it). I think the black material on MG looks great.

To remove the binding around the body was what I was getting at, and smooth the wings out. But I'm really not very committed to this idea, it's just something I entertained.

What's to offend?
My own feeling when I read your OP was,
"do what you like!" I suspect others thought the same, and comments like this are extrasuperfluous, so...
Then I thought about what a good song title
this would be...

I'd love to swap the black TRC on my 4004cii's for a gold plexi TRC, but this isn't an option through RIC. Personally I think it would be cool if the 4004cii came with the gold plexi TRC to make it a bit more "upscale" from the Laredo, (plus it would match the gold hardware). Here's the look (from a Lemmy).

Steve, if only you were a leftie: the leftie Cheyennes come with the gold-back-painted plexi TRCs. I'd prefer them, too.

paul thanks for noticing,it just seems weird when a post is put on and no comments, interaction is why we're here, etc blahblah,no biggie, just sayin'. steve-yes! that's what i would like, but am way too practical (cheep) to pay $300 for a 5 inch peice of plastic,or $800 for a pickup for that matter.....

Okay...Since you're persistent I'll give you my opinion, Woody! I think your uber rare black plexi TRC should remain with the bass that it originally left the factory on. My experiences with TRC swappage usually ended in me discovering that different TRC's have different sizes and/or screw hole locations. Most people want their instruments to either be all original or be able to be returned to all original. If you trade off your black TRC, you (obviously) won't be able to return your 4000 to all original and whoever gets the TRC probably won't have an all original bass either. And in my opinion the TRC swap photos above didn't result in anything necessarily looking any better. I think your Cheyenne might look nice with a gold TRC, but I'd recommend waiting for one to show up on eBay and buying it. It may cost over $200, and it
is just a little piece of plastic...but when you go to sell it, you'll get your $200 back.
I mean, its your bass...so whatever floats your boat! And btw, you haven't offended me at all by the swap! I mod my basses too so I can't be all judgmental when others choose to mod theirs...I just thought I'd put in my $.02.

jeff-thanks! that was exactly the kind of input i was looking for. those 2 basses are probably gonna stay with me,but as u said they don't fit exactly, and if i modify them they might not go back on correctly. i really like the plexi style in general, and will probably just continue looking for a plexi to replace the one on the cii. later,w.

This is the first I visited the forum since you started this thread. Even though you have a number of views it has only been 24 hours.
If you really like the gold TRC on the Cii why not give the original the gold treatment? Many on this forum have done it. I know it isn't the same as a back-painted on but once you are more than a few feet away it is hard to tell. It would only cost you the price of a can of paint.

wow, ken, that does look great....so you spray the entire front of the trc gold, and then reapply black (detail brush?) over the raised lettering? sounds somewhat daunting.....and yeah,i do tend to be a bit "anxious" sometimes. one of my favorite expressions is from seinfeld, costanza's father bellowing "serenity NOW!!!"

or the old joke about liz taylor microwaving a 1 minute burrito and screaming "hurry up!!" at the machine.....

The paint is Duplicolor Gold Dust Metalic (Chrysler color). i believe Kevin Kuney knows the number. The black is a Sharpie.
