Hey all,

I have a '68 ric 4001 that's checkerboard binding is coming apart from the body and I'm wondering what kinda glue will be best to stick it back to the body, and maybe even a proper procedure to reglue it back on. Any ideas as to what's the nbest way to go about this?

thanks!

Kevin

Very careful use of gap-filling super glue (not too much! and some masking tape pulled over the edge like this:

Let it set up for an hour or so, then carefully remove the tape.

Paul, is that 4001 hanging in the background waiting for a LS conversion?

And where did you get that funky chartreuse masking tape?

Damn, Mustache Man...sharp eyes. This was taken awhile back, and that 4001 is nearly done...

The tape is premium 3M tape, Kris. It's pricey, but very strong. If it can hold binding in tension like it does without tearing over the sharp edge, then it's more than a fashion statement!

I've heard that super glue will ruin the nitro finish on this age of instrument though... I assume white glue won't hold or stick to the binding... would wood glue work a little better? Or is there a specific superglue that won't wreck the finish?

I appreciate the help guys, the masking tape idea is brilliant!!

Your bass does not have a nitro finish, it is conversion varnish, so no worries.

Freakin awesome! Even fireglo is conversion varnish eh? You learn something new every day.

Any recommendations for a glue to use?

Although I generally reach for Loctite products due to their local availability you should find what you need here: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Glues,_adhe ... Glues.html

Super glue will ruin any finish if you're sloppy. The trick is to use small drops of gap-filling stuff (water-thin will run everywhere and ruin the finish very rapidly). Then, there's the tape thing to draw the binding back into contact with the rabbet.

I use Zap-A-Gap; Stew-Mac #20 is a good equivalent. The Stew-Mac glues come vacuum-packed, and have a nifty no-spill bottle with a brush in the cap.

HINt: For extra life, keep super glue in the refrigerator.
