Would this be a bad move to make? I received a 360 from Jdog last night and I've still got it in the box warming up to room temp since it's been so cold here lately. My house is dry during the winter and I want to find a clay humidifier to use. In the meantime (a day or two) would it be unhelpful or even harmful to place a small damp cloth or sponge somewhere in the case, maybe in a partly opened plastic bag?

I'm also not sure about where to find clay pot humidifiers. Neither my local music store or my not so local Sam Ash store sells them. Any advice on where one can find them would be greatly appreciated as well. I'm thinking about making one out of art store supplies but I don't know if making a clay pot humidifier is more complicated then merely adding some water to clay and sticking it in a container.

You can get a clay pot humidifer for under $5. I cannot think of a music store I have visited that does not have these. I would forget about the wet rag idea or making your own.

Well I called the Sam Ash in King Of Prussia this morning and they said they don't sell them, only a "stick". Then I called a local store and they said they don't carry them. I'll keep calling around. This area is pretty bad for stuff like this. If you asked someone around here where to find a gourmet hamburger they'd point towards McDonald's.

Inexpensive humidifiers and hygrometers (humidity indicators) can be bought at any cigar store.

The good news is that the humidity is climbing with each passing day now as it gets warmer.

I knew a guy who insisted that a sliced potato did the humidity thing. He had a soap carrier that he had drilled holes in. He would plop a chunk or two of sliced potato in and stick in it the case. He’d change it every few days. I thought it was kinda strange but hey you never know…

Like Peter said – warmer weather and more humidity. Almost time for the spring adjustments!!!

I took a plastic 35mm film container, (yes, I still have an old fashioned 35mm film camera) punched holes in it, cut a common bath type sponge into small segments, and put one of the moistened segments in the film can inside my cigar humidor. I guess this would be OK as a temporary fix for a guitar. I stress the word temporary.

Actually, your film cam humidifier is not much different than this.

I have heard of people using a sliced apple in the same way. I have a couple of Dampits (one Super Dampit) for my acoustics but rely on my whole house humidifier for my electrics.

if you have forced air heating you can place a few bread pans with water in them next to your heat vents. This will bring up the whole house.

The main thing is to have an inexpensive hygrometer in the case to monitor the humidity level.

During winter I vent the clothes dryer inside thru a lint trap.Keeps the heat and moisture inside instead of wasting it outside.

Is it a gas dryer? If so, you could poison yourself by doing that.
