Our Song - Bass cover clip

Although it's not "official" to my knowledge which bass was used on Our Song - it seems that some Good People here said that Chris used the T-Bird.
The tone on that song (and most of 90125) was, let's say - updated - to a then more "modern" 80's style, and it's not so proeminent on the mix, like for instance "Release Release", still the T-Bass was used on the 90125 tour...

My bass cover clip features my J-Bass. connected to my trustworthy sansamp bass DI and that's about it. It's my other "Squire-bass" and I tried to get a similar tone... I also looked on the net for more info and all I got were just guesses, one of them pointed to the J-Bass.

Anyway, what stands on this bassline, I think, it's that Chris managed to play a very melodic piece of bass work, that makes the whole positive message of the song really shine in a very "Happy Happy Joy Joy" way. You can easily hum the bassline along and that is for me an excellent sign!

I love the way the whole song was produced, the drumming is fantastic and how it locks with the more "bassy" bass, pardon the repetition... the vocal harmonies... I think everyone has his spot to shine on this one, and big big credit to Trevor Horn, for sure.

My bassline rendition is here

I invite you to take a look at it, with wishes of a nice weekend!

Hi Miguel, good to hear you again. I agree with your review of the tune - it is one of my faves from that period. Of course your rendition is fantastic - well done! Keep them coming!

Amazing as always, Miguel. Very energetic part and you really have the rhythm going. I envy your and Rickinroma's right hand techniques. Kudos once more.

excellent (as usual!),miguel! that has always been a favorite of mine,it seemed the most "yessy" song on 90125,a great ja vocal, and just a fun one to play! i think i will have to try this one out on the cii-it kinda has that gibson humbucker sound, albeit on a maple instead of all mahoganey body....

Most "Yessy"? My vote for that goes to "City of Love" Just kidding, Woody! I always felt that "It can happen" was the most "Yessy" track due to the huge Squire thumbprint in the vocals. I still think the entire CD is brilliant.

Yes , my theoretical choice would be It Can Happen, for the basic reasons Jim pointed out - especially the distictive vocals by Chris.

But at the same time I opted for Our Song, for the reasons I mentioned on the 1st post.

Fact is that It Can Happen "suffers" from a phenomenon , better said - I suffer from the phenomenon that I prefer almost every live version that I happened to listen to prior to the studio one. And 9012 LIVE (plus the video from it) was one of the first recordings I heard from Yes. It results that when I then heard the studio versions they felt to me really strange. Not so much with It Can Happen, but more with tracks like Hold On and Changes. My big friend who turned me on to Yes always used to joke that the studio versions of Hold On and Changes were too clean and the vocals seemed too "Choir boyish" compared with the powerful executions of the official live versions. I don't know why but I agree. That also happened comparing Yesshows' versions of ... basically all the tracks there (Paralells, Time & a Word, Going for the One, Dont Kill the Whale, Wonderous Stories, Gates of Delirium and Ritual).
About Yessongs that rule didn't apply cause I heard the studio versions firstly... I wonder if that ever happened to you?

It must be some kind of psychological effect, but every song I hear first on the live version, I have some "pickiness" to accept the studio version afterwards.

Well I know I diverted a bit from the original subject, still I'd like to thank you all for your comments about my clip and for the discussion!

Cheers

Miguel

i always thought city of love sounded like it would make a good michael jackson song  .....i do like the song! also my "most yessy" comment probably because of all the little bass/drum punches in that song ,sounds almost like early petebanks yes to me. oh if we're doing requests, "i'm running" is an alltime fave of mine....

Interesting Miguel what you said about 9021Live vs the studio album and how we become comfortable with something and when presented with the variation it sounds differently "wrong". I remember having CTTE on 8-track before vinyl and listening to it almost to destruction of the cartridge. When I got the vinyl and anticipated the fade and track change and it wasn't there, it was almost disconcerting. Took quite a while to get over that effect.

miguel,

another great effort from you.

i posted a comment on your astral traveler video, and though i said it all there, ...

every yes cover and tribute band i've ever heard has been just awful, ... but not you, ...

you have such a gift and intuition for chris's style.

i'm loving all your stuff.

right on, man. Image
