hi people ...as you perhaps know i have bunch of guitars on ebay and australian buyers have been sending me questions about shipping there. is there any reasonable way of shipping things over 79 inches length + girth? i feel pretty bad telling them those $400/guitar with ups/fedex. i have this problem over and over and i though they changed the size limits to 108 inches on international priority about two years ago but according to usps website it still is only 79 inches. anybody?

Tell them that you can have the instruments hand delivered to them by D Aitch L.

From memory they reduced the maximum size two years ago. USPS claims it's an Australia Post issue, but I can ship basses in from Tokyo for $170 using EMS, so some arm of Australia Post accepts big parcels.

well the thing is that global express is still 108 inches but the cost is crazy - even more than ups or fedex...someone suggested to simply pack the guitar and try several post offices until someone will accept it - but who has time to try that?

Every time I've had an instrument shipped from the US the only options were Fedex or UPS..... USPS offices simply refused to ship them. I do know of instances where large items have snuck through perhaps due to inattentive USPS clerks.

Others here have had some success with other shipping companies but for the life of me I can't remember them!!

so i just shipped 60's gretsch firebird to australia - $385 with ups was the best i could do. i know it is crazy. i shipped two days ago big guild d-55 in case to spain for $125. if it was ric 360 sized guitar to australia it would be $500 due to size and let's not even talk about bass. so i wonder - good people in australia please write couple well worded letters to your mp_s - real letters on paper. the paper trail does sometimes wonders. i have seen priority international size limit changed to 108 inches in spain that way, i have seen same to happen even for slovakia...so the australia and czech republic are one of the few that are left...now

Yeah, was just about to say, I've received about 4 basses and 2 Gibson Explorers (cases are BIGGER than a bass case) in the last 12 months via EMS with no problems..

I sent a Les Paul to the US, cost me $550 though, had to go via courier..

We need Bruce Thomsen (quezyrider) to chip in here, he recently sent me a bass and it think it cost about $120us to send.
I have had several basses sent over the years and they all cost about the same.

The first guitar I purchased from the US (350SH) cost $120US to ship, the last one (4001CS) cost over $400US.

I had a 4003 in a Ric case sent to Melbourne for $165 and a 620 in a Ric case for almost the same amount . Both late last year.
I think it is the luck of the draw with USPS. I even argued the toss with a US store who wanted $350 to ship and it seems """technically""" they were right but proof of the pricing is in the posting ( or something like that ) .

My FG360/6 cost US$350.00 to bring into Australia. That really hurt.

i have one thing to share about export from us that was new to me: do not not forget to have SED or shipper's export declaration : form7525-v(7-18-2003) with it if the shipment is over $2500. it will save you big headache - the one i've just been through.

update:
yes they will charge you for it - $10 and they want the paper copy too - ups does (at least here in western new york) or they want power of attorney to do the whole thing for you and i have no idea how much is that.

Aint no way Id pay that unless I got the RIC super cheap and ,given the way the dollar stacks up ,its as cheap to buy a good sh ric over here.
