Found this- http://www.musicintheabstract.org/rush- ... il-ged.mp3 on the Counterparts website, there's a moderator over there named Mita that's always posting oddities from Rush audio recordings. The sound of that rick just brings back so many memories of my late teens, it's a sound all to it's own, nothing but a rick 4000 series can make that sound. That is all. :D

Alot of Geddy's tone is in his fingernails. He has the "grounded" sound of fingerstyle playing but the attack of a pick player. Simply the best of both worlds.

The way he and Neil P. mesh together helps to.

I play with my fingernails a lot too, I guess maybe that's one of the reasons I like the Geddy sound so much. Ricks tend to favor a hard attack like that too, the maple and the overtones give a lot of bite and snarl to the sound.

that was great! that bass line is so prominent anyway, but it was nice to hear it isolated, really getting the details. i enjoy geddy's playing, but there is that extra special something the rick provides....

I play back and forth with and without a pick. I've found that I have to play with a very thick firm pick to get it to operate properly for me. I wonder if this is typical for bass players.

Rush haven't really been my cup of tea for a long while....but Geddy is still one of the reasons I got into Rics. He has a tone like no other! :D

Wow! Killer. Thanks for the post. It does sound vaguely Rickenbacker-ish, doesn't it?

I also switch back and forth between a hammerstroke and a pick. When I DO use a pich though, I also need a really heavy one. I usually use a Dunlop Torex 2.0mm. They are heavy enough to take the attack on the bass...but really too heavy for use on guitar, imo.

I sometimes use a large triangluar aluminium pick on the rick for very bright attack but it dosen't work well all the time only on certain types of songs. I find on some Rush tunes it works well. on others a plastic or felt pick works best. 8) and geddy dosen't use picks that's why he is a rock star and I'm little old me!
