It may not even be that. Try as I might I have a pretty hard time switching to upright for faster numbers, whereas my intonation on the fretless electric is fine. I think flawed technique is often the problem for a lot people when many assume it is the ear. Example: when I went to play Bill Conklin's instruments, I tried out many a fretless and also his Mobile Electric Upright. Well... I wowed them on the fretless but I don't think I was very impressive on that MEU at all.

I sound much better on my Zon than I did on the NS CR4M I used to have.
