Status makes graphite necks for 4-string J, P, and Stingray basses and 5-string Stingrays as well. Has anyone messed with these and found them to be up to par with wood?

I have, on a early model status. I hate to say, but it was horrible. I'm not anti carbon fibre though (I've owned a few Steinbergers)
I'm sure there must be some shining examples out there though!

I'd really love to see a full carbon fiber Ric someday, I'd buy one.

it just did not feel like an instrument that you wanted to play and had a rectangular unfriendly feel to the neck.
The Steinberger L2 basses felt a lot better to my Rickenbacker trained hands...

I would not be into a all carbon fibre Rickenbacker but a carbon fible rod in the neck would be well worth expirementing with, It can cure a lot of problems before thay happen.

I can think of a couple of people who'd agree with me. All I'm saying is, they've pulled it off very nicely with cellos, upright basses, some electric basses*... why not a Ric? And I did notice that JH had his interest piqued by this idea one time when it was brought up on the corporate forum. It'd probably be pretty easy to play on for long periods too, with the light weight of the material (in spite of its strength).

*I played a Modulus made of graphite once and no one can talk trash about that bass--it was killer. If I had the cash I would have picked it up. The tone was a lot more "alive" than you would expect.

Count me in. I think that would be killer.

I would consider a CF/G neck with maple body wings. Of all the basses I have owned over the decades only my Zons have been impervious to any weather/temperature/humidity related issues.
