I heard this on the radio today - first time for a long, long time - and asked myself:
"Self" I asked..... "Is this cool, uncool or just plain garbage?"
What do you think?
Feel free to post links to other "cool, uncool or just plain garbage" hits that may have rankled you, inspired you or turned you into the hip-swingin', finger-clickin', jive daddy monkey-momma you always wanted to be.
For the record, I reckoned this one was pretty cool back in the day..........

And i told myself: "self, this may once have been cool, but is definitely garbage in my book".

You'll note that my last sentence was in the past tense, Greg.
No longer in the 'cool' category............

This song cracks me up! I honestly can't decide!!!
Just when I think it's one, it quickly becomes another!

I'm with you on this one Kenny. I found myself smiling and thinking "boy we've come a long way musically since then"

I remember that! But I don't remember Chris Montez. Seems there was a Dionne Warwick type singer who had a hit with it. She had a better arrangement, more of a jazzier sound.

This has also been covered by Peter Allen and OMD. Peter Allen's version is pure cheese with all the trimmings. OMD's is weird and rather dark - kind of like a stalker's version of the song.
Having mentioned the great man, one must put up his signature hit - is it cool, uncool or just plain garbage?

Ya gotta admit, it's a catchy tune. I say cool.

Yeah...... me too - cool. The guy was a fantastic showman!!
OK.... here's another:
I hated it for a number of reasons - schmaltzy, played to death on the radio but most of all, this song competed with Procul Harum's "Whiter Shade Of Pale" for the number one spot over here for months on end!!
Being a huge J.S. Bach fan at the time I just wished Scott McKenzie and his ****** song would rapidly disappear and sink into the Bay!
Of course, YMMV.............

Chris Montez = cool!
Peter Allen and Scott Mackenzie = unbearable and nearly impossible to listen to OR watch!

Chris Montez - back in the day I thought it sounded like a drunk chick, and the handclappers were all drunk as well...and it wasn't rock and roll! Still feel the same.
San Fransisco - beautiful melody - goofy, made for TV lyrics.
Peter Allen...how did that ever happen? Oh he married Liza once, right?

Scott McKenzie: nice voice, good melody, maudlin embarrassing lyrics. Was this dude a one hit wonder? I blush to admit that I bought the single when I was a kid. (I thought I heard an acoustic 12 string is why.)

As a San Francisco native daughter and aging flower child, that's my official anthem. Hey, it may be cheesy but it's easier to sing than the Star Spangled Banner Way Cool for Scott Mckenzie!
