Funny looking avatars?

Ok, what's up with the funny looking avatars that look kind of like cartoons of real photos? Kira's and Melissa's stand out in particular, or maybe it's my monitor?

Yeah but the picture was taken in 1993, so I was before my (Geico's) time!
