Didn't Post Offices Used to be Open Late On 4/15?

Yesterday I had to mail my girlfriends tax returns for her and when I got to the P.O. at 5:00 it was closed. It used to be open till 5:30. When I went to the post box that has a 6:00 pickup I found that it now has a 5:15 pickup. When I went online to find out which P.O. branches were opened late I could only 1,the main Post Office in Downtown Minneapolis. And they were only open till 8:00 PM.

I seem to remember Post Offices being open till midnite on April 15th.Did I just dream that,or did Post Offices used to have latter hours on Tax Day?

Not sure if it's every post office, but yeah, usually there are a number that are open longer hours on Income Tax Day.

So did you get it in on time?

I remember the Rincon Annex in San Francisco used to stay open till midnight on tax day. But I dunno anymore, with Arnold tightening the belt on public services as is his wont.

I thought that it was a matter of "as long as it's postmarked by midnight on the 15th" or something.

Used to be midnight - big ritual. Here they shortened it to 11:30 p.m.

Postal revenues from the tax returns are way down; too many folks are filing online.

Used to be quite a social event here in Lawrence. They even made something of a party out of it, with this crazy band called The Alferd Packer Memorial String Band playing fiddle hoedowns for folks to dance to out in the lobby until closing time at midnight.

The dance party still happens on April 15, but the P.O. closes a lot earlier than midnight nowadays.

A lot of offices used to stay open late for the big ritual on April 15, but with all the rising costs and such (notice how often the price of stamps increases these days?) coupled with the fact that many people are e-filing these days, I'm guessing they've cut way back on that practice. I haven't sent a tax return by mail for many years.

Oh, and Arnold's belt tightening has no effect on the post office since they are run by the Feds...

Well maybe that's so, but my mind is made up - don't confuse me with the facts. Part of the governor's job is to take the blame for everything we don't like here, so I'm just invoking my inalienable right to kvetch, and he makes such a nice big target ...
