Is that what that is? My friend made me watch that very clip last night - coincidence? He asked me what that bass was.
Looks like it was designed by Roger Dean.

To each his own, but IMHO that has got to be the most hideous bass I have seen yet.

I've seen far worse.

I've always wondered why Phil uses such top end basses to get such a muddy tone with.??

+1, it just strikes me a little dated and odd, sort of like hobbits should be playing it on the cover of an old Yes album. It's like a view of what we thought the future would look like from a 1970 perspective.
That one number, The Seal, wasn't too bad.

If I'd never heard Rostropovich play that ... He's got guts, I'll give him that. I think he should have tried it fretless however.
Much nicer tone than Phil was able to coax out of his.

Tasteless. Nightmarish. Gross.
Just because a bad dream can be built, doesn't mean that it should be built. That thing would traumatize children and render livestock sterile.

Yeah, these things are just plain weird (they do have some nice wood though). I think Kira had it right, some sort of futuristic dream from the 70's, probably under the influence of some less than legal substance...
Interesting though, that a design from a lot earlier than that can still look so great, classic and modern all at once. I'm talking about Rick basses, of course...

Well, don't mince words, Paul. Tell us how you
really feel about it.

Depending on when the original vision was, they could have been legal.

I believe this is the bass in question as shown at NAMM:
