Gorgeous Walnut 4001,
double bound (inner white, outer black), black TRC and guard.
Looks a lot like the Walnut 4002 prototype on the Smith book (p.211).
Tons of close-up pics on the auction page (Olivia's Vintage)

That is a Walnut 4001 with B/W laminated binding. Rickenbacker produced a few like that over the years. That is one is particularly good looking.

Yes but what about the non-stamped jack plate? That got me thinking this could be some sort of a test instrument. That and the beveled edge guard. I know these could be aftermarket parts but the 4002 did have a beveled edge guard. And the TRC looks like Plexi with beveled edge... What do you think?
Anyway, if I had a Walnut 4001, I'd be packing it as I type this to send to Paul W for a double binding job...

IIRC, the bass in the Smith book has walnut headstock wings, checker binding, and and the pickguard is black-white-black laminated.

Ilan, if you dig deeper in the multitude of photos Olivia always provides, there's a shot of the original jack plate, with PC as the date code. It was kind of scratched up, so the previous owner likely wanted to spif it up a bit. The tailpiece looks new, too. The TRC is definitely Plexi and it looks as though the edges were sanded/buffed. I think a B/W laminated pickguard would mirror the binding nicely.

You can read more about it here, back when you could have bought it from Bryce for $1899. The blank jack plate is supposedly the original one, the PC one is a replacement.

If I had only seen it!!!
That's my fault for never checking any forum here other than Ric Basses - the bookmark goes directly here.
If I could get it for $1,899 I would definitely make the effort.

that''s it guys...rub it in...
it was a hastey sale, i should have sold something else...one of the '73 FGs.
i bought the bass from the original owner, he had a friend from Ric that helped him put the finish package together.
i'm not sure how it skipped a serial # - pssibly due to the shop worker passing it off directly to his friend?
in any case, it is a beauty and unfortunately suffered some finish checking en route from the temperate states to the -30 Canadian winter. yes - i kept it packed for 48hours, but JH confirmed that checking can occure to a boxed/sealed instrument.

Well, one day when RIC re-introduces Color of the Year, I hope one of them will be Amber Walnut with figured maple tops, double binding, black plastic and chrome hardware. Just like that one.
Then I'm going to flip out.

I usually don't care for black binding, but this bass looks great!

Bryce, do you know if the bass came from the factory with beveled edges on the pickguard and TRC?
