I know the older ones have toasters and full width inlay. Are there any other difference's? How do they compare in sound ?

The necks did get bigger on 70's versions, but not by much.

Jeff Scott and I did a side-to-side A/B test at MARF 2007 - my '74 WB (w/ higains) vs. his '67 WB (w/ toasters). Both had Chromes. IMO, the tone of both instruments was extremely similar, with the '74 being louder.

I would not hesitate to go after a 70's one, unless you're a stickler for ridiculously slim necks, in which case you should wait for a 60's version.

I'll also add that I currently have a '66 WB, and I prefer the tone of my old '74.

The headstock shape did the standard change from '60s voluptuous to modern squat, no walnut wings, but narrow shedua strip added to neck in place of wider walnut strip. Loss of plexi finger rest on newer ones.

I don't remember the tonal differences so go by John's assessment; he is younger and still has plenty of unfilled brain cells to store more data with.

Seems like there's a lot more '60s ones out there than '70s, just from off-the-top-of-my-head statistics.

That's for sure, and the register confirms it: from '65 to '69, there are 44; from '70-'84, there are just 13.
