Layaway/Payments for a new Ric?

Obviously, the wait times are really long. But is there a store where you can buy a Ric, have it reserved with money down, and keep paying on it for the next 16 months or so? Or do you have to pay in full up front, at the time the order is placed? Pardon my ignorance!

Many stores with Ricks in stock will do this. Try Wildwood in Colorado and Dave's in Wisconsin.

Thanks, I'll check them out.

I think a lot of stores will hold one on order for some small down payment like 10%-20%. I'd guess a lot of the smaller ones would do this even if they don't advertise it.
I know of a few that will just go ahead and place the order, no money down at all and call you when it shows up. After all, at the rate that Ricks fly off the shelves when in stock, it's not likely that they won't be able to sell it if you decide not to buy...

I have some mixed feelings about this sort of activity. While on the one hand you can use the waiting period to save up; on the other hand two years is a long, long time to wait. If you can stick it out, and don't get in a hurry, or are prone to the need for instant gratification, placing an order with a dealer like POTR, North Coast Music, or Rhoads' Music might be the way to go.
If I had to do it today, I'd simply skip placing an order, and proceed to save up, then when I have the necessary funds accumulated, I'd start sending out emails to see who has what on hand on a particular day. You could get lucky that way.
Like I said, I have mixed feelings.

Certain luthiers do this, too.
Mike Parks (The Rickenbacker Page) usually will take a 20% deposit, and you can pay more towards it as time progresses. I did this on one of the two I bought new from him a number of years ago.

I was hoping to get your opinion, Jim, after reading about your new Ric. A lot can happen in two years... It's a long time to wait. On the other hand, it takes discipline to save that kind of money on its own, outside of a locked-in layaway situation. It's hard for me, anyway!
