Beatles TRIVIA

Post by brammy »

Many biographies of The Beatles say that the Larry Parnes audition was held at Alan Williams' Blue Angel Club. Actually, at the time of the audition, his Jacaranda Club was deemed too small but Williams recently leased the Wyvern Social Club (108 Seel Street, Liverpool) and the audition was held there. Later the site was converted to the Blue Angel.

The first group to audition was Cass and the Cassanovas (Johnny Hutchinson on drums). The second was Derry and the Seniors. Third was Gerry and the Pacemakers. Fourth was Cliff Roberts and the Rockers. Then came the Silver Beatles (the first time the group used this name) who needed Johnny Hutchinson to fill in as their drummer Tommy Moore had not yet arrived (he would before the end of the audition).

Although Parnes and Billy Fury liked the Beatles, and would likely have hired them as Fury's backup band, John Lennon refused their request to play without Stu.

"Alan, can you get them to play something without the bass player?" Parnes asked WIlliams. Lennon objected. "We're a group, all or none. That's the way it is." So instead of getting to back Billy Fury, the Silver Beatles were given the job of backing Johnny Gentle on a short tour of Scotland (20 - 28 May, 1960).

Tommy Moore arrived after a couple of numbers. At 36, Tommy didn't fit in with the other Beatles. Lennon (19 at the time) especially kept up a constant stream of caustic remarks aimed at the drummer.

Paul dedicated P.S. I Love You to his then girlfriend Dorothy (Dot) Rhone.

When Paul McCartney and The Beatles went off to Hamburg, Rhone and Cynthia Lennon would often visit them. While she was there, McCartney would jealously guard her by placing her near the group while they were playing. He requested that she dye her hair blonde and wear miniskirts, similar to his ideal woman, Brigette Bardot. Although Rhone loved McCartney, she found his jealously and control over her too much to handle, so she would return home to try to get rid of him. (Lennon also returned back to Liverpool). Rhone moved out of her house became roommates with Cynthia Lennon in a Liverpool boarding house.

While Rhone and Lennon were in Liverpool, waiting for their boyfriends to return, Paul McCartney found opportunity in Hamburg. Well-known for its red light district, McCartney had girls around him all the time. When he returned to Liverpool, he visited Dot Rhone, quickly said it was over and then rushed out of her room.

I am of the opinion that Macca's a pretty nice guy. The Toronto story bolsters that.
Thanks. I don't know where you get all these great photos!

The jazzy saxophone solo near the end of “You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)” was played by the Rolling Stones’ guitarist and co-founder Brian Jones. The recording of the song began with all four Beatles during the summer of 1967, with Jones adding his saxophone part in June. The song was shelved for two years until April 1969, when John Lennon and Paul McCartney recorded their vocal tracks and added additional sound effects with the help of road manager/assistant Mal Evans. The song would not appear on record for yet another year when it became the B-side to the Beatles’ single, “Let It Be”, released in 1970. Brian Jones would not live to see it’s release as he died on July 3, 1969.

A harmonium is a free-standing keyboard instrument similar to a reed organ or pipe organ. Sound is produced by air, supplied by foot-operated or hand-operated bellows, being blown through sets of free reeds, resulting in a sound similar to that of an accordion.
The Beatles used this instrument on songs such as
We Can Work It Out, If I Needed Someone, The Word, Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!(George Martin), Dr. Robert, Penny Lane, A Day In The Life and "Cry Baby Cry".

Andy White.
He was a session drummer that George Martin brought in, because Mr. Martin didn't want to risk the "new" Beatles drummer, Ringo, being a dud like Pete Best.

Close Its was AlaN White (not The yes Drummer) was brought in because Geroge Martin thought Pete Best Sucked and ringo had not gone into the studio yet. But Ringo did play tamborine in the first recording and then drums in the final released version

Good job! you know your Beatles trivia :D
