Good for you, George. It's a very nice read and I like your adventures.

Surf music didn't really get the big attention up here in the Bay Area as it did down South, although my big brother was a surfer from Pacifica (BRRRRRRRR!) who listened to the well known Beach Boys, Jan And Dean, and others. I heard it going on in one ear but was completely fixed on the British Invasion, being too young to surf. You have to understand, surfing around here is not often like going to the beach in Southern California. It's for the brave and the foolish, the strong, and the warmly dressed.

Yep Kira..know what you mean..I surf up here in Sonoma County and have to wear a full wet suit...surf music during at it's peak was pretty hot in many parts of the country...of course the vocal group the Beach Boys were the most popular, many instro bands got played inland also

I'm sure my memory is selective about the music in those days. I do remember a huge shift of focus on my brother's and his friends' parts from Surf to Psychedelia and Dylan about '66. About that time he lost a kidney in a surfing accident and left that lifestyle behind in favor of a life of crime

Well I wasn't far behind and the rest is, well, still partially blurry to me. Hey, it was the Seventies.
But I'm rambling ... more on point, I'm glad I've been given a long enough life to cultivate a second acquaintance with Surf, and I'm grateful for your filling in the blanks in my experience of it.

So I'll be lurking around here on the beach somewhere, catchin' some rays and some groovy sounds. Cowabunga, Dude!

Great story George. When I was growing up in South Texas, the local Elks Lodge was the place to be on a Saturday night for live music; surf and/or otherwise. The big difference was other than say a Freddy Fender or the Sir Douglas Quintet, everyone was basically a cover band (myself included).

Cool Richard...would of loved to see Sir Douglas at that time! Rick my drummer, grew up in Texas and saw Johnny Winter a bunch of times way back when. I used to hang around the Whiskey A Go Go about the same time..Chicago Transit Authority was the house band!
