Again you torment me, Jeff.

I still need to put their CD in and listen to it.

Now this is weird. Last week a friend emails me an mp3 to listen to - a Decemberists song. I dig and think little else of it. Today I'm going through this mp3 player I have...

[some necessary background on the mp3 player]
A friend got an iPod a couple years ago as a gift. He copied all his songs from the old mp3 player onto the iPod and gave me the old one for free. Pretty nice! It's a 40GB player, about 50% full. So basically, it will take me years to discover all the great music on here. Every month I discover artists I've always been curious about but never bothered to get into. Sure enough, this player often has them.

[back to our story]

So I was going through the mp3 player today and saw The Decemberists. Four full albums. Score! I start listening, and then come to this topic to look for something completely unrelated and find this thread, on the second page, too!

The universe is trying to tell me something? I can't imagine what or why, but I'm listening!

And like a dolt, I still haven't even listened to the CD that friend gave me.

Maybe the universe is trying to tell me something too.

Not a huge fan (can't dig on the guy's whiny voice), but they are Rick players.

Their often-guitarist recently sold his beat up 381 on Ebay.

I've tried so hard, because they're a band I should like. Just can't get into 'em.

This is a rare "love at first listen" for me. Usually, the music that I like takes time to grow on me, in order to develop into a long term interest, but this music feels strangely familiar, as if I wrote these songs years ago and forgot about them. And of course I love so-called "whiny vocals" :) I'm fully digesting the first album "Castaways and Cutouts" before moving on to the second.

I think it's next month when they're playing here locally.

I may see if I can swing seeing them... but first...

I still need to listen to them.

I suck complete stool. :(

Best performance at Bonnaroo this year in my opinion. Thought I had recorded the whole show and came to find I had a defective SD card and didn't get the show. Did record them at Bonnaroo in '07 though. I don't believe they're using Rics any more. The 381 was at the '07 & '08 shows I saw but didn't get played. This tour for Hazards of Love there's not a Ric in sight.

Here's a few minutes of video from the show:
