Need Suggestions

Just stripped my 79 rick down. Needs some final light sanding. Debating on just putting some kind of sealer and leaving her be. has Black pickguard and black truss rod. Anyone reccomend the best way to seal it yourself. Tung oil?? Caenuba Wax? Anyone ever see a fireglow with a black pickguard. Was thinking of also taking to the shop and haveing her painted. Just need to save a little. Thanks for any advice

Tung oil with a couple of progressively finer steel wool rubbings should work fine; although if it has binding, I'm not sure how that might be affected. Not sure which wax would be best. I use Warwick surface finisher on my oil finishes.

Jeff, if you do a search here, you'll find a number of past discussions on this very topic.
My own favorite is Watco's Danish Oil Finish, in either Natural or Light Walnut (for Walnut Ricks!).

I second the Watcos Danish Oil. Follow it with a couple coats of Minwax. I've done this to a few instruments. You'll love how much faster the neck seems to play afterward.

Yes! I think so,
Mapleglo with black pickguard and truss cover is the best!

Thanks Everyone. Dane, how does the Tung Oil hold up against dirt over time? Also, what have you done to your Fretboard? I left mine alone. Its not bad. Not great. A little varnish is missing on the C fret.

I didn't do anything to the fretboard since it's so hard to remove the finish there. I can't testify to the durability of the finish since two that I've done have been for customers and the one I did for myself isn't completed yet since I'm waiting on a component 
. I hear it's a very easy finish to care for though should it get dirty or even a minor dent.

Tung oil will not affect the binding - I used it on my 380L when I cleaned it up prior to sale.

If I had a blank RIC like that I'd go for a unique color. If you're using a black pickguard, choose a light and solid color (no 'glow'). I think a muted or neutral tone would be best.

if i were ever to refinish my "white" 4000 with black trim,i am thinking of going for the fender salmon pink color,like bruce thomas' or pino palladino's basses. or turquoise .....love those 60's colors....

Woody, it's actually a '50s color--'55 Chevrolet "Coral". Oldsmobile had Coral that year, too, but it was a brighter, more orangey shade.
