I'd like to change the white pickguards to gold on my 330 but what to do with the truss rod cover??

Anyone done this, hows it look and how did you sort the TRC?

The only hard part is getting the right ratios of bananas to magic dust...

But seriously, folks...

The only real problem in doing this is getting a decent match on the gold color, of which there are hundreds of possible shades.

Pay attention, now:

1. Find a rattle can with a close match (and it doesn't have to be dead-nutz on, because the TRC is a couple of feet North of the guards...), make sure it's enamel, not lacquer.

2. Clean the TRC well with a toothbrush and some dish soap and hot water. Even new ones have mold release on them, which will screw up the gold paint. Old ones always need a good cleaning from wax, tobacco, and general schmutzlike compounds. Allow to dry thoroughly.

3. Lay the TRC on a bunch of newspapers. or stick it onto a stick or piece of dowel to use as a handle. You can use hot melt glue or two-sided tape.

4. Spray light coats of gold enamel from a foot or so away. Don't spray it really wet, to try to get it to cover completely with one coat. Shoot for three or even four, so the paint is going on in a mist and dries rapidly. Still, allow the enamel to dry for at least an hour or two.

5. With a clean rag dampened (not soaked!) in paint thinner or lighter fluid (naphtha)--not lacquer thinner, acetone, alcohol, or any other solvent but ordinary cheapo paint thinner or lighter fluid--wipe the tops of the raised black letters to remove the gold paint. Let dry for a few minutes.

6. You will not be able to see the "MADE IN U.S.A." anymore, as this is not embossed and there's really no practical way of masking it.

Don't bother, someone will put the kabosh on it. Make your own TRC threads tend to disappear quickly.
