hi guys,

i'm wondering if anyone has replaced the stock hi gain neck PUP with a 12k toaster (e.g. from a V63) on a 4003 (from 2006 or later). if so, what's the tonal impact of such a mod?

does such a mod even make sense from a versatility/functional perspective, as the newer 4003s have the vintage tone selector?

just wondering if anyone has tried it, and if so, how does it change the sound. and what's the effect of flipping on the 'vintage tone selector' if you have the 12k toaster as neck PUP?

Hi, the 12K toasters sound quite similar to the regular button pole higains in my experience. What little difference I could hear would be lost in a mix. The lower gain toasters are much more noticably different though.

The vintage switch only affects the bridge pickup only (by filtering out the bass) so it won't affect the sound of the toaster.

I concur with Stephen. At 12k, you lose the clarity, finesse, and definition the 7.4k toasters have over the higains.

I just played my 2009 4003 MG with double Toasters and nickel SunBeams (DR Handmade). Good God!! That bass sounds FANTASTIC. I am all about double Toasters, even on the fretted basses now.

so josh,are your doubletoasted ricks using the 7.4's or the hotter t-pickups? i really like the dr sunbeams as well,what gauge are you using?

I've been doubletoasted before.

My post may have been a tad OT because my Toasters are all low resistance. The neck pickup in my 4003FL is 6.8, the bridge is 7.3. On my 4003 they're both 7.4 dead on. The gauge of the Sunbeams I use is .40-.95. I love lighter gauges for the decreased tension and the extra pliability that results.

thanks,trying to keep all these facts straight. i am a fan of "underpowered" pickups,the pickups on my dano hodad bass are pretty weak/low o.p.,but they sound great with a lot of amperage! i've got 40-100 sunbeams on both my ricks,it does give a certain elasticity to the proceedings....

...if you really want elasticity try TI Jazz Rounds. For the ultimate in elasticity TI Acousticores are IT! But they won't work with magnetic pickups.

That's a 4005, specifically a late-60s double-bound. They stopped making them in '84 (I think) and though many may clamor for Rick to bring them back, it ain't gonna happen...

Specifically, that is my '67 4005WB that I bought in '73, my first Rick! Still have it.
