Consider Exhibit A, Ted's 4002 with pick guard off.

And Exhibit B, the back of Dave P's 4002 pick guard as he was rebuilding it with two NOS bridge pickups (note the 3 leads on each).

And Exhibit C, the front of my own 4002 showing the Tolex-covered front of the pickups:

Thanks gang! My concern is: the pickups I've received look like they may have a wire missing. Dave's treble pickups have 4 wires each. Mine have 2 and 3. Perhaps each pickup is missing one wire each? Is it possible to open these up if needed and do some surgery/grafting?

I thought I noticed that! That might be a tough one. I'm not the electronics or pickup guru, but I know those puppies are riveted shut. You might have to drill out the rivets and then re-rivet in order to attach the missing wires.

wow-given the rarity of these,one wonders if they might even be the ones originally installed on yer bass?! (where,i say where did ya find "em?)

For those not in the know, I can spill the beans now.

Big big big big thanks to Tony C. for a phone call last Wednesday night around 9pm. I had my phone on silent, but saw the voice mail alert a little later. He was letting me know about a newly listed auction for a pair of Rick pickups. They were listed as 381 John Kay pickups. Anyway, about 50 emails flew back and forth between about five resident Rick experts during the next 12 hours. After much discussion and debate, the concensus is that these are 4002 pickups, even if they're missing some wire(s).

By 11am Thursday morning I was speaking to the seller on the phone. He got them in a batch of random stuff from an old music store in Mississippi. I informed him of what they actually were, and that they were more rare than he realized. I made him an offer and here we are.

The funny thing is, they arrived yesterday well packed in a box, and inside a bag in the box. The bag was marked "$15." So it's likely these sat in a display case in a music shop in Mississippi with a $15 price tag for years. Considering how few people know what a 4002 is, and an even smaller subset knowing all about the pickups, it's entirely plausible.

One of the main things that convinced me these were 4002 and not 381 JK is the rivets. Guitar pickups mounted on the top of the body would have had four screws in the corners. The rivets point to a pickup mounted under the pickguard.

I immediately considered these may be the pickups from my bass. That would be neat, but I doubt we could ever know.

Great find both Tony and Jdog. I would try to contact Ted and ask about the wires. Hopefully if they are 4002 and missing wires, it is a matter of them being cut off and there is a stub to grab onto. Remember, 4002 pickups are potted.

I wasn't sure WHAT they were exactly, but they sure did look like 4002 pickups.....and was worth further investigation...which apparently was done.

Hopefully they are what we hope they are and all is well, and another 4002 is put back to factory specs.

Thanks to Tony I was in on the discussion about these pickups before you bought them. The missing wire was one of my concerns but they look like the genuine article. Well done Jason. I am sure that you can get the wiring re-established with all of the expert help on this forum. Enjoy.
