It's funny----that EXACT thing once happened to me. I can't remember what airline I flew (might have been Alaska...I was headed to Seattle), looking out the window while they were loading luggage, and watched the guy pick up my guitar case and throw it 15 feet up to the loading part of the plane.
Imagine the shock! Luckily it turned out alright......if the guy catching it had missed, it would have been ugly. Those guys are total grease monkeys---they could care less about what's inside (like a guitar case isn't obvious!).
Lesson of the day: leave it at home, or take it as carry-on somehow.

I always take a guitar with me on road trips, but haven't mustered the courage to put one of my babies in the cargo hold of a jumbo jet just yet.
And I wouldn't want to be involved in an international incident* if I, say, pummeled a luggage handler for tossing my Gibson SJ!
* I very nearly went off the rails Chuck Norris style when I was in Heathrow last year. GRRRRRR, never will I use that airport again.

Short-scale Ricks and Fenders in original cases fit into the overhead compartments on most larger jets.

D'oh! I poked around a bit to see if it was already up but failed to look in the bass forum -I have way too many strings to go in THERE.

Ah, all the more reason to listen to Kira and give Shorties another try.
Otherwise----get a professional flight case (I mean
professional....ATA is just another company that can be paid off, doesn't mean quality), insure the heck out of it, and make sure it is locked!
