my luthier says its time-my old frets are gone....and he is recommending a slightly larger and higher fretwire size, and i tend to agree. is there a size limit i should try to stay within for this? he recommends 100 gauge tall.....paul? anyone?

Wow. I answered this yesterday, Woody, at length...something fouled up, probably on my end...sorry!
Anyway, I've refretted several Rick basses from the mid '80s using .102 fretwire. It's a matter of preference vs. tradition. The acoustic Comstock that I recently completed for Andy O'Connor also had bigger frets. It just felt like it played better that way. Generally, though, I stick with standard-sized Rick frets on my refins and restos.

thanks paul! i love the way my cii feels,(with the larger frets) and am looking forward to having the 4000 up to par,it's frets are pretty chewed up,but i had gotten used to playing it that way,now i know why i preferred playing the cii!

Dont panic Woody.
I once refretted a 4000 with wire more like the current Rickenbacker size. Dont fret (pun intended) it will still sound like a 4000...
