Greetings, I have a question about the use of the seemingly preferred combo of scratch-x and xymol on ricks that have been around the block and have a few dings and chips exposing the wood. In such a case, is this incompatible? If it is, is there some way to make it work safely? Would love to see what everyone is talking about, but would not like to cause moisture damage or prevent a refin. Thanks.

Well, this treatment wll improve the gloss of juat about any paint, but it will not fill scratches or chips, and it won't erase dings, either.

The only caveat concerns a paint chip or scratch that exposes bare maple--you don't want to soak the bare maple with wax.

However, all you'll get if you do is whitish residue in the scratch or chip--Zymol has no silicone, so it's unlikely to affect a refinish very much.

any easy/safe way to seal the maple or is that just asking for trouble? If its any danger no sense in even trying.

A small dab of clear nail polish works best, as Jingle-jangle has said.

Jimmy, without looking at your guitar or bass, I'm going to venture a guess that, sealing the maple and going through the Scratch-X and Zymol process, will give you an instrument that has chips and scratches but will also be very shiny. Depending upon your own ideas of what looks goo, the gloss could actually make the scratches and dings stand out more than they do now.

This is a decision that you'll have to make for yourself, but you could be happier with results if you just gave it a good cleaning and left it at that.
