Would any of you lucky souls who own these rare beasts be so kinds as to post a sound sample or two? :?:

I would love to hear one in action.

Hi Christian,

Check out "Going For the One" live on "Yesshows" and if you have any bootleg Yes recordings from the 74-76 tours (Relayer) Chris used the 8 string Rick on "Roundabout" for the encore.
Alternatively check out "Success Story" by the Who on "The Who By Numbers".
Here is a picture of the bass John Entwistle used on that track.
#MH2553 is one of an identical pair of 4001/8 basses that both Squire and Entwistle used on the above songs.

Hope that helps whet the appetite!
PG.

By the way,
Rickenbacker 8 strings are strung the opposite way to other 8 stringers in that the bass string is uppermost.
Heres a shot of the new Hagstrom HB-8 to compare with the Rick

You can have your Rick converted into an 8 string.

Ask Dane Wilder (aceonbass) for details.

BTW - not all Ric 8 strings were string with octave under fundamentals.

Apparently there are advantages to the stock Rickenbacker 8 string arrangement... as seen here: http://www.12stringbass.net/InvertedStrings.htm

I'm thinking my next conversion (as soon as this one gets paid off) will involve this stringing method and, yes, it will be a Rick 12ver.

Very cool Mathew. I play with a pick and get different 'effects' depending on the direction and angle/speed of attack with the pick. The fact that I do use a pick was one of the reasons i went with the octave over fundamental (just like my 12 string guitar). Man I would love to hear your 12 project when finished, I'll bet it just plain 'ole Kick A... what pickups are you planning to use?

The project won't even begin until a couple of years from now at least, mind you, as my 8 string Rick project (as coordinated by Dane Wilder) still needs finished and paid off. However, for the future 12ver, I'm thinking Dark Stars with electronics wired for Ric-O-Sound.

Find posts by Harry Bridge - he's posted links to many many mp3s of his work on a Rick 8 string.
