Here are a few photos of the 4004L with Dark Star pickups:
See
http://www.hammoneng.com/ for info on the pickups.
I didn't do the work; I bought it this way. Cool bass though!

And although Ron O'Keefe is now the happy owner of this beautiful V63, the gold plastic was thought up and installed by me:

^one of the rare occasions that a white pickguard looks good on a JG. the pearloid meshes well with the inlays.

It doesn't really look too different from a 4004Cii, other than the stacked knobs for V/T V/T:
Until you look at the back:
And inside:
The switches add the ability to select single or dual coil for each pickup, standard tone or 4002 tone circuit for each pickup, and either mono or Ric-O-Sound mode for the output.

- First, remove the body and go get some maple.
- If you can't find a suitable single hunk, buy smaller ones and some glue. Make sure you have a couple of clamps handy.
- Next cut away everything that doesn't look like a Rickenbacker.
- Test fit it, to make sure it will still fit in the case. It may still look a bit rough at this stage.

- Once the glue dries, take the body out to the driveway and do a little clean-up sanding. Ignore the fact that it's winter and you live in Wisconsin.
- Move into the garage. Once it warms up to about 38 degrees, you're good to go for spraying the varnish.
- About a week later, you can wet-sand it over the kitchen sink to 12,000 grit and give it a final polish.
- Finally, make a bunch of pick guards and buy a couple spare TRCs so that you can coordinate the bass to your outfit for important gigs.
- String it up and take it for a spin with the recorder running and post the results, so that your friends don't think you're crazy.
