It's Probably Time

Post by winston »

.................that I posted a link here to some of my home recordings. http://www.ilike.com/artist/Brian+Medway

Constructive comments are more than welcome of course. I would truly appreciate hearing your thoughts on these home recordings.

Some of our members (you are too numerous to mention by name) who I share my recordings with behind the scenes have been very helpful to me in terms of getting the mixes sorted out. I am really appreciative of their help and I would like to take that opportunity to say thank you ladies and gentlemen. Your support but more importantly your critiques of my recordings have been so helpful. I feel that I have been really blessed to receive your advice and good cheer.

Every song has at least one Rickenbacker in it..........usually my 4003. I use a variety of guitars and also my trusty Roland keyboard.

I would also like to thank Howard Bishop and Ron Viney for contributing their talents to a couple of these tunes.

Congratulations on getting that up there, Brian. You know I love your music and I've been telling you that you ought to make it more available. I'm really glad to see this. :)

Brian: It is indeed time. There are some great gems there. Thanks for allowing us into your studio.

Great stuff, Brian, from what I've heard. I haven't browsed through all of them yet, but what I've heard so far I've truly enjoyed!

Thanks Kira, I posted these songs here mostly because of your constant prodding. I still can't believe that I actually listened to you. You are such a bad influence............. Just kidding............you know how much appreciate your support and advice. You are a great sounding board and a consumate professional. Not to mention a great musician and songwriter.

Peter, what can I say? Much of my life is an open book but some things (like my music and my recordings) I normally only share with people that know me well. My music to me is like embarking on a journey and I don't expect everyone to want to take that journey with me, but I am thankful to people like you who do. Your support for my music and my recordings has been phenominal. I can't say enough about what your support has meant to me. Hopefully a simple thank you will suffice.

Stan, seeing that you have a very respectable pedigree as a radio DJ I am overjoyed with your response to my music. Thanks, it means a lot to me to receive such a great comment from someone who toiled in the business like I did (albeit from opposite ends of the spectrum) but was obviously much more successful than I was.

Thanks again everyone..........you have all made my day a lot brighter.

That's really great stuff, Brian. You're one of the musicians on the RRF who inspires me to greater things.

I just heard "Anytime At All" today for the first time. That one should go up on the artist page too, I think. The covers are great but I think all of Brian's originals are strong too, and I love these recordings.

He's tackling the same challenges as myself in these home studio productions, and the biggest challenge is always the drums - I think he will agree with me that a convincing and vitalizing drum track is the hardest thing to accomplish at home. He uses an electronic kit while I use software drums and keyboard, and I think we're about even on the results. I think the single most effective way to improve both of our productions would be to work with a "real" drummer and traditional kit. Short of that is to strive to get better and better at working with what we've got for that.

Hi Jim,

Your assessment of my efforts to make some music in my my little studio environment is extremely generous. Thank you very much.

Thanks Scotty. You have always liked that song of mine best. :D

Thanks again Kira,

I was just telling Howard and Trotty yesterday that I am on the hunt for a drum set. It's been 34 years since I actually played the drums so I am crossing my fingers that I can actually still do it. We will see if that experiment works out assuming that I find something local that fits the bill and the wallet. If I do then I will have to invest time to learn how to record the drums in a room and then some more money to purchase microphones and other equipment to record the drums nicely. It all takes time and money unfortunately.

I'm pleased that you put your 'homework' up on the forum, Brian. As you know I've always been very interested in your projects and these songs form an excellent tapestry of "The Music Of Brian".... both originals and covers.

I like "Under My Thumb" and "Any Time At All"..... mainly because of the excellent rhythm guitar work in the former and tambourine in both!!

Indeed, it's time, alright! Glad to hear this latest collection. The instrumentation and vocals sound great. My only critique would be the stiffness of the drums, as covered already between you & Kira. But at least those current drums track will serve as a decent click track should you decide to play over them with the real drums.

Keep up the great work!

Brian, cool collection you have running here! Enjoyed it very much! As others have noted - more dimension to the drums. 'Sunshine..' had a very nice feel to it like the tone you get on the bass.

Thanks Mark and Tom,

I really appreciate your comments. :D

Tom, the bass on all of those tracks except for two (Dear John and Photographs) is a JG 4003 plugged into a Sunn Model T head and mic'd through a Beringher 8 X 10 speaker cabinet. I use two mics to record the bass. A Fender P51 Microphone on the edge of the speaker cone and a Marshall MX1 V67 microphone catching the ambient room sound about six feet away.

Cool Brian... the blend works nicely. I might start recording later this month - might be looking at doing the ROS with a mix of line in from each pickup as well as two mics for each channel - then blending. should be fun! Keep your stuff coming - sounds good!

I recorded two more Cream songs over the weekend. They are not ready for general consumption yet though. I still have to spend time mixing them.

Now that I seem to have the hang of how to record the various instruments that I use, I am considering recording mostly my own material from here on in (with a few exceptions that are already planned or are in the works).

Thanks again to those few brave souls who took the time to listen comment. :D
