I've seen a couple I like the look of, specifically the G6073 Electrotone. I seen one review which said that it weighed a ton, but I'm looking for an informed opinion from you guys . Has anyone here played one or had the chance to look one over? Any help gratefully appreciated.

I once played a Gretsch guitar; probably a '77-'79 model - don't know remember exactly. It was back in the early '80s. Felt and played quite nice, but they were well out of my price range at the time. But those fake f-holes. Seriously; make a hollow-body or don't, but don't try to fake it. Uggh.

That said, I'll bet this bass plays nice.

Didn't Gretsch basses (60's models) have thumb rests/tug bars on the bass and treble sides of the bass?

John Entwistle used a Gretsch bass in '65, shortly after he got rid of his RM 1999, it's probably the thumpy bass we hear on "Daddy Rollin' Stone" and "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere"

I've demoed a Broadkaster bass (G6119B), which is fairly similar to the 6073 and liked it a lot....but they do tend to be a little heavy and they are short scale (I think the 6072 "Country Gentleman" is the sole exception to this Gretsch rule - and it is one HUGE bass). I like short scale basses but they're not everyone's cup of vodka... I passed on the Broadkaster at the time because of the weight issue (my back was in a dodgy state back then), but I've been trawling around for a used one at the right price recently.

Thanks Evan. I also like the short scale, but also don't like the idea of a heavy weight. I still like the look of it even though it may be large enough to actually hide behind.

i got to play an old one (the big hollowbody with the paddle headstock),and the main thing i got from it was: it was huge! with that big round hollow body AND a full scale set neck,the left hand reach to the first fret was daunting,and i have pretty long arms and fingers. it did sound really nice and full,but wasn't something i would go for-loved the look and sound of it,though. have never seen or played any other gretsch basses.
