Bassic Colors No. 5 – Perhaps a Burgundy, m'dear?

Ah, nothing like a nice Burgundy – or perhaps a Burgundyglo? Both names have been used over the years to label the overall wine-colored deep red that became a popular "standard" color from roughly 1963 to 1984. It reappeared as the Color of the Year in 2002, and once in a while pops up as a popular choice for refinishers. You can usually tell Burgundy by its see-through color exposing the subtle wood grain beneath. While the two examples I show here are very close, Burgundy(glo) has shown wide variation from a light red "stain" to the almost-black "eggplantglo." My examples here are my 2002 COY 4003 and Gary Clauson's super-rare combination of single-pickup, set-neck 4000, fretless (!), and in beautiful Burgundy. So let's drink a toast with a fine glass of Burgundy! Post photos and discuss!

You're right, like nothing that I have, anyway!

My April 73 4001 is the eggplant burgundy that is so dark that it looks like jetglo until you shine a light on it. I've been thinking about buffing it out with Nu finish(?) to see if it could be lightened up some, not sure though.
(The one on the left- d'oh!)

This is My favorite Ric Color. Fireglo is right up there too.

My '79 4001 Burgundy:

My second Rick bass, it opened the floodgates to a wave of RAS!
Great bass, excellently preserved... plays and sounds as good as it looks. Played it last night as a matter of fact. Nice strong straight neck.
Burg is a cool color. Ya gotta love it!

IIRC, that would be a no-no according to our resident finish guru.

That fretless 4000 is the hottest looking thing I've seen in a while. Probably sounds killer too, I love the everlasting sustain of set necks.

I thought Nu Finish "Scratch Doctor" was the successor to "Scratch X" or whatever that one was that Paul used to use? I remember someone here with a dark burgundy getting his to lighten up some through buffing, although I don't recall what he used.

Nu Finish makes a whole range of nasty silicone laced polishes and such, but the Scratch Doctor is fine...

my 1978 4001 in a dark wine cellar

With the hardware removed you can see how it has lightened up with age .

I like that dark. Subtle. DCM before the 75th.

Not mine, but I still think it's one of the best looking basses I've ever seen.
