The binding on my 360's gone yellow in the spot where it touches my guitar stand... luckely it's barely noticeable.

Anyone else have this? Any way to remedy this? *I fear that once it's turned yellow it will stay that way*

I put an old blue cotton sock over the guitar stand so the 360 touches the sock now. Any chances the binding will turn blue now?

Yeah ,my binding has have turned brown.

But that's 20 years on a stand for ya!
Just noticed my Gretsch Phoenix has a mark on the back of the neck too,
but ya can't feel it when playing.

Don't store your guitar on a stand. It's much safer in the case it was made for.

The only remedy is a refin - nasty chemicals have leached into the CV clearcoat. I have a rack stand that has this problem (but not to any of my Ricks). Judicious use of cotton covers has prevented any further issues..

My 4001 spends far more time on my cheap guitar stand than it does in my arms...and has for 20 years...my stand uses that beige surgical tubing for cushion- not even the slightest discoloration occuring on my binding where it comes in contact with the surgical tubing- might it be the foam material on your stands outgassing/reacting with the binding that's causing the browning???

Sounds like we need to get a government grant to investigate it. Anyone in?

I hate having to get it out of the case every evening... they're safe where they are standing right now - no person or animal comes near it during the day! And my 480 doesn't even have a case.

Tbh, the black foam around the thick wires the Ric stands on doesn't do anything to it... it's the somewhat harder plastic against the back/neck that causes the discolouring.

There has to be a happy medium here.

I finally have all of my gear on Hercules hangers like the stores use. Ya sure, many will complain. At least there are only 2 points of contact in a non-cosmetic area.

If you keep everything in their "rightful" cases, you will never just pick something up and play it. Too much trouble, like defrosting something from the freezer for a snack. By the time it's ready, you've already lost the craving...

There has been some flack on other boards about the case fabric staining the guitar finish anyway. Probably NOT a common thing, but IMHO hanging a Ric or any other well-made guitar just encourages neck straightness, and you won't be fighting tuning problems because of a sudden change in humidity or temperature.

Really? Your original post was about your guitar stand leaving marks on the finish. Doesn't sound very safe to me.

This argument has nver held water with me. Remember the adage 'If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well'? This applies here. My guitars reside in their cases when not in use, yet I still play them - All of them. The freezer comparison is no comparison at all. It takes an hour or more to thaw something frozen (unless you use a microwave). How long does it take to get a guitar out of it's case? Maybe five or ten seconds to retrieve the case from it's storage place, and another two seconds to pop the latches and open the lid. If you've lost the craving in fifteen seconds, there are other issues to deal with.

Others say, "I don't have the room to store the cases!" You have to store them somewhere. It takes less room to store the guitars in their cases than to store them separately.

This discussion of guitar stands has come up before, in both this forum and the official Rickenbacker forum. The houses were divided then, as they inevitably will be now. The socks may or may not help. If the foam pads on the stand are outgassing due to age, it still may leave marks on the finish.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Store your guitars in their cases. There have been too many sob stories about guitars left on stands. In the case, a guitar won't be knocked off the stand by the kids throwing a balll (Yeah, I know - They know only to do that outside). It can't get knocked over or dinged by the wife running the vaccuum. Your cat can't use the guitar as a scratching post. Your male dog won't mistake your Fireglo for a fire hydrant and lift his leg.

If you're as overprotective of your Ricks as you say, the case is the only way to go.

I store mine on a stand that I bought from Herman Miller furniture. I don't have kids or pets, so one will scratch, pee, or throw a ball at mine.

It's actually the most basic of colors that causes this--the carbon black used as a colorant in the EPDM foam covering the support.

Cotton covers will eventually be breached, too.

Surgical rubber tubing is what you want. Ugly yellowish potato-bug color, but so what?

I will say that I've had no problems with any stands or hangers, at least not for four years. At first sign of bleed, though, all will get a make-over.

I wanted to reply "Only cosmetically, as I don't have kids and rodents locked up inside cages in the kitchen." but... to my shock I had to find out the neighbours dog was in the bedroom... a Glenamaal terrier... small, but very big enough to tip a guitar off a stand

I don't have any room for hanging the guitars, as all walls are normally covered with frames... as they're all down right now I could try a redecoration, but then they might end up in a spot like over the bed... which isn't the best of places either.

I will try the socks for some time to see if it works... if the yellowing starts again I'll notify y'all... I hope it will be far into the future!
