I just bought an Musical Instrument Insurance Policy with the Anderson Group. I have been using a rider on my homeowners insurance in the past but they don't have much of an understanding of the product and have 10 pages of exclusions and restrictions. Does anyone have any thoughts on this subject?

Not an expert, but I know there are differences in insurance cost depending on if you're a professional (play for money) or hobbyist/collector.

I've been carrying a policy with Heritage, which IIRC is underwritten by Travelers. Fortunately, I haven't had to test their coverage, but the policy is very reasonable (I'm not a pro) and is based upon declared value of the gear.

Regardless of who you pick, I think it's a good idea to carry coverage beyond your basic homeowners/renter's policy if you've got more than a couple instruments.

I switched from regular renter's to Music Pro to Heritage. Heritage is great, many forumites like Bill and I use them. Let me know if you want a hook up with contact info.

I have a Personal Articles Policy with State Farm, which covers all my gear no matter where it is.

I've had to have one item covered (a Bose PA system that was stolen out of my garage) and I got a check nearly immediately.

Can't recommend it enough.

Excellent idea- might even be a great sticky type thread...gee, maybe RRF could put together some kind of "Best Practices" for owning RIC instruments and this could be a part of it.

If we made every thread that was of passing interest a sticky then non sticky threads would be in the minority.

Stickies are usually created when the topic is something that has been raised and discussed over and over and over again ad nauseum. Creating a sticky avoids repetitive discussions with the same outcome. There are some exceptions to this practise of course but we scrutinise those very carefully.

Many of our members have been here for many years and newcomers are generally exhorted to read and search the database before raising a hackneyed topic for discussion. So as a result, you will not find a whole lot of stickies on this forum.

This topic has been raised a couple of times before btw and I suspect most people have adequate insurance in place because these threads did not elicit much discussion.
