"Byrds Treats"

Hi Guys-

Have some goodies here for ya'll; some of this you've heard on You Tube and/or Sugarmegs, some you have perhaps not:

Mr. Tambourine Man-"Vocals Only"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/f9gw3b

The "Edgy barritone against the clean tenor"...the laws of physics, mathematics, overtones, beauty, & love, working seamlessly together. Perfect.

************************************************************************************************

Mr. Tambourine Man-"Alternate Stereo Mix" (Never Before version???

http://www.sendspace.com/file/vtuxir

***********************************************************************************************

I Knew I'd Want You-"Music only"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/k86h78

You can really hear Leon Russell's Fender Rhodes playing those "Low rumbling trills" here; sounds like the finished product, pre vocals.

**********************************************************************************************

The Bells Of Rhymney-"3 Vocal Takes"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/jxbu1z

Take 1 & 2 you've probably heard before at SM, & YT; Gene Clark dominant vocal!!

The 3rd take, with Roger dominant lead instead of Gene, may be new to you.

Listen to Roger & Gene crash & burn at the end of take 2, while only Crosby makes it to the end!

Take 3 is close to the final product, but still no cigar, as Roger flubs a couple notes, and cracks at the end when he goes from the suspended 4th to the 3rd.

At 3:51, during take 2, it sounds like somebody in the control booth, or one of the guys is saying "Oh God no"!!

Right before take 1, David Crosby says: "It's miners, and mine OWNers". (Trying to keep the order of the lyrics correct) :D

**********************************************************************************************

We'll Meet Again-"Vocal Take Final?"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/aq1tnv

Might be the vocal take they used; here it is up front, unmixed, dry, and substantially louder than the finished product. Music sounds complete.

**********************************************************************************************

Set You Free This Time-"Early Take"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/u5fl5c

WONDERFUL to hear Gene so excited; calling the shots, etc. Both sweet & sad at the same time, Gene tells Roger and/or David (I think Roger) that he has a "Groovy thing" going on with his guitar part.

*********************************************************************************************

She Has A Way-"MTM Take"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/wt5g6h

An early attempt at the "New" version (Which I don't like as well as Preflyte); we get to hear Terry Melcher sing a little bit. :D

*******************************************************************************************

Turn! Turn! Turn!-"Instrumental, only one 12 string track"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/9qg607

Proof once & for all, that the 12 string was overdubbed on the outro, intro, and rest of the song; we don't hear the Bm to A "Chord slashes" from Roger in the intro/outro, and we do hear the B & E strings droning continuosly, which is impossible to do when you play the "Slashes".

Also, proof that the double time "Bluegrass" 12 string solo was overdubbed over the existing "Single time" 12 string part, creating that swirling mass of jangle in the finished product. Again, impossible to do live totally authentically on stage, without a second 12 string guitarist, or pre-recorde tape.

I've found a way to kind of "Cheat" on the intro/outro, and cover "Both" parts. Instead of playing Bm to A for the chord slashes, try these voicings:

X54000 & X01000

The 1st chord looks like a Cmaj7 slid up two frets, and the second would be a A7sus2nd I guess. With both these voicings, the root notes your' playing (D & A respectively) is the same thing that Chris Hillman plays, and if your quick with the right hand, you can "Upclaw" the now open B & E strings, which will now drone continuously, like the record.

I've tried this while playing with two guys who were playing the Chris & David parts, and it sounds really cool. And again, going through the Janglebox will help give you that "Double tracked" sound.

******************************************************************************************

The World Turns All Around Her-"Early Take"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ed4xcc

I never have liked Crosby's guitar playing on this song; kind of "Ramshackle crash bang" if you ask me. Could it be that old resentment because it's a Gene Clark song??? Like, "Let's do it, get it done, and get on to the next song" perhaps???

David's guitar is much louder here prior to Terry's mixdown, so the sloppiness is much more exposed. On the upside, we get to hear the harmony guitar part he plays with Roger in the intro & outro better, which is good for learning purposes.

Despite all this, the finished product does not detract at all, as it's one of The Byrds finest tunes, and just like Gene's "I Knew I'd Want You", David sings one of his most inventive harmonies ever; a beautiful "Cascading sunny day mid '60s vocal", which is absolutely brilliant.

*****************************************************************************************************

Eight Miles High-"Solo overdub, Colombia sessions"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/f8slxr

This should be new to ya'll...One of obviously several takes overdubbing the John Coltrane bit. Vocals sound like they may be the finished product, too.

***********************************************************************************************************************

Why?-"2nd 12 string solo, Colombia sessions

http://www.sendspace.com/file/vqhz8h

Roger overdubbing a second 12 string solo on what sounds like the finished product; VERY interesting, but probably a good thing they just went with the one 12 string track. :D

Enjoy!

Christian

I'd love to listen to these files, but .flak extensions are not recognized by any Windoz program.

Jim -

Go here:
http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

and download the latest version of FLAC frontend. It's a freeware program that allows you to decode FLAC audio to .wav files. It's fast, and works great.

Is there any way to get these to work on a Mac? I can't seem to get them to play.

Go to the same link listed in my last post. There's a FLAC Frontend version for MAC, too.

If you want to play the FLAC in WMP without decoding:
