Janglebox 1 question

One thing I have noticed is that the JB1 sounds very dark or muffled (like the tone knob is turned all the way). This is especially the case if it's been on bright for a while. Has anybody else noticed this? Of course, it could just be 40 years of over-treble-ization.

Not at all. Sounds like you may have a problem. Try a fresh battery and report back please.

I have a JB1 and I certainly notice the differences between the sounds when the switch is in any of the three settings; dark, normal, or bright. I usually play with the switch on bright.
I don't know what sort of amp you're using. I have two that I alternate between; one is a late '60s Kustom K200 series head and cab, the other is a mid '70s MusicMan 110 RD Fifty. I'm playing a 360/12 string with standard hi-gains, and I get all kinds of jangle & chime out of both of these amps and the Jangle Box.
One thought does occur to me just now. How long has it been since you swapped out the battery? I can hear the sound going south when the battery gets low. That may seem like a dumb question, but sometimes it's amazing how the little things like that can make a difference.

It sounds like you might have a weak battery. I agree with Jdog, pop in a fresh one and report back.
I am in the process of saving up for a Janglebox 1, and it's my holy grail compressor. It's probably the most versatile compressor there is, from what I hear, and the Janglebox 2 is even better. When I get mine, I'm very interested in trying some Jazz with the "Dark" function, as everyone uses "Normal" or "Bright", but "Dark" is one I've never heard

If you have neither, I'd recommend saving 50 more bonz and scoring the JB2. It has a larger, more versatile palette. I have both and will keep both, depending on my playing requirements. Peace, out.....Goofyfoot.

Who knew that the Janglebox would lead to cool groovy fashion!
I use the janglebox 1 and love it. I just leave the toggle in the middle, and have the two knobs set to 1 'o clock, and my 12 string sounds awesome.
I do change the battery every gig though.
