My first 50s rick was a mapleglo 450. I wasn't looking for a 50s Rick, I was just looking for a mapleglo 450. Why? Because of Fred "Sonic" Smith. The first one I found happened to be a '59.

Kick Out The Jams.......
First saw these guys at a rather small local music club called Rainy Daze. You sat on the floor as I recall. I also recall seeing a band there that I had never heard of at the time. They had a frontman who wore really bizare makeup and went by the name of Alice Cooper.

These guys were one of my major, major influences when I first started playing guitar. Easily one of the greatest rock bands ever, so why do so few people know them?

They were "the house band" for the guys I hung with. We loved the Summer of Love sound, but the Five had the energy to match our testosterone levels.
Only saw them once live, but got to help the roadies stack the Marshalls and hang the flags. (That was a teenager's delight!)

It was the whole political and drug thing that went with them. They upset a local record chain that then refused to carry their first record, as the opener to "Kick out the Jams" contained profanity that you still can't say in the media. They also weren't very commercial, as they initially had very few(if any)3 minute radio songs untill the release of their first studio album in 1970. "Back in the USA" was plagued by a mix that had no bottom whatsoever, and the political rhetoric of revolution had spurred the interest of the FBI.
They were an awesome band that really liked to push the envelope of freeform music in their live performances, and on their last studio album "High Times". Their influence has been globally recognized in what came to be known as both "punk" and "metal", and the material is still as fresh today as it was back in the 60s and 70s, Imho.
"Looking at you" is probably my favorite song by them, definitely the studio version of it. I can't tell you how much time I put in,(as a guitarist that had only been playing a couple of years), in to those 3 glorious guitar solos, especially the 2nd one. This song,to me,represents all of the elements that make for a perfect rocking song.
