there's a new yes dvd of early early stuff,including some unreleased videos of "looking around" (one of my favorite early songs). it's available on the yesworld website. there's even a video of "time and a word" on the site,but unfortunately its a lipsynch.....this was just discovered by the band while looking for something else,evidently.....the video at least has a very clear presentation of peter playing his rick and chris playing the modified fender telecaster bass. check it out.....

That is a cool video, even if the sync is bad. It may be the cleanest video I've ever seen of the original lineup.

This had to be shot just before Pete Banks was sacked for Steve Howe, since Steve appears in the rest of the TAAW videos that I've see, except for som B&W from the Musikladen DVD.

I'd like to see that "Looking Around" clip, it's a great track - I don't see the video on the Yesworld website yet...

Is that a horseshoe pickup on the Telly bass??

It is just a cover, I think a J bass cover; what is underneath it, however? With four knobs and, I believe, a switch, there must be a pickup under the cover.

jeff,it seems like i read somewhere that chris added a jazz bass pickup to the telly...or tele.....yeah it also looks like chris isn't actually touching his bass strings much....

I noticed that it sounded like his bass played itself!

alas, doesn't tell you what's under the pickup cover though.

interesting-it looks like he put rickenbacker knobs on it. the cover looks just like the type used on the fender jazz bass' forward pickup.....

Agreed, I'd hazard a guess that its a jazz pickup underneath that cover.

Which is original control plate btw? I'm not up to speed on Tele basses but is the Tele guitar control plate the late addition?

I'm also having trouble telling whether it still has the original pickup or if that's just a empty hole.

Always though this bass was a curious choice of his - the neck must be like a cricket bat in comparison to almost all of his other basses.

i had a '68 tele bass,that had been modded with a deep contour on the back of the body.it was a great sounding bass,and surprisingly lightweight,but the neck size was on the side of "brutish"..... for mr squire's humongous hands,it obviously posed no problem! and it does look like the original tele pickup is in there....i'm seeing the 4 magnet pole pieces....

How'd it sound? I have no direct experience of them, always thought they'd be somewhere in the territory of the first P's.

my bass had a schecter pickup that had huge pole peice magnets,and had a very full range sound,lots of bottom and snap. the body was very lightweight and resonant,something you don't always get with these basses. i preferred it to the 1 or 2 p-basses i have played over the years,but i have very limited experience with p-basses. the stock pickup on the teles was a single coil,the schecter had a humbucker with a coil tap switch,so i got the best of both-mostly i played it in single coil mode.....it probably sounded even more like a p in hb mode....
