I thought I'd post a bit of musical doodling to show what the 4002 sounds like. The recording used a 4002 with TI flats plugged directly into ProTools via the bass's XLR jack (which only sends the signal from the bridge pickup), with a bit of compression. I went off on a bit of a Stevie Wonder tangent there, but hopefully this gives a good idea of what the 4002 is all about.

That definitely sounds like the 4002 tone I remember, but the jazzy tone with flats is great. Thanks for sharing! I really like some of your ideas, especially on the first 1/3 of the recording--I may have to steal a few of those licks. Comparatively, I'm embarassed at how little I seem to have put into my recent clip (of the 4003FL with two Toasters). It's inspiring to have good players like you hanging around!

It definitely sounds good but very close to a Fender Jazz... not that there's anything wrong with it. Probably has a lot to do with the fact that 4002 pickup locations are identical to a J.

My reason for posting the clip was to expose the tones on the 4002 to a wider audience - I'll work on getting some additional samples posted. And yes, Ilan, I agree that there's definitely a Jazz vibe going on when using just the bridge pickup.

Playing Scott Pope's 4002 I can tell you that there's a LOT more going on than just that resemblance. Because each pickup is a humbucker, they have a lot more independence from each other... truthfully I thought the R&B, Jamerson-style thump I could get out of his bass was otherworldly. Usually I soloed the neck pickup, did his "push-pull" removal of the .1 uF cap, and turned the tone nearly all the way down. Whoa!!! That thing thumped in the night like none other.
