Here's the latest cover I've been working on...I'm still focused on improving my production chops. Any suggestions very welcome. Thanks!

Sounds great, Mark. the line "Love is old, love is new" could have the lower vocal a bit more out front.

Thanks Rich!

I did what the Beatles did--sang each of the 3 harmonies 3 times...making 9 separate vocal tracks. Didn't need to do much to them after that other than some reverb.

Man I was starting to get into it ... was waiting for 'You never give me your money,,, you only give me ....' all I could hear Kris already said. Nice, nice job Mark.

Maybe MW will drop in and lend his very good professional ears to this...

Great job, Mark. All I can add to what's already been said is that I'm impressed by how you nailed the timbre of the synth line.

What I'd love to hear is you (or anyone else who's interested) take this song and instead of matching what the Beatles did, twist it up and make it your own.

Thanks Howard and Mark!

Well, one of these days I probably will twist a cover song into something different...but the main reason I've been doing so many of these lately is to learn how to properly engineer a recording. With my own stuff, anything goes...and as a result, I often go to the wrong places due to my own technical ignorance. With cover songs, there is a template to measure where I hit and where I miss. I'm hoping that after all this practice at predefined targets, I'll have an easier time translating all the sounds in my own head.

Thanks for listening!

Ah, yes, I see your motives. I still rely on the templates for my stuff, too.

Thank you, Alex! It could be done live with the right singers...the music is easy. But the key to the vocals is having each of the three parts sung three times...so, if you had three singers, with two clones each...

Mark,

I just stumbled across this thread - very nice work. The vocals are great. The only criticism I would make is that although the synth sounds great, the timing of some of the lines seems rushed. But that's picking at nits - great job, I enjoyed listening. I've heard a couple of other Beatle covers you've done and this one's as good as or better than any of them!

I'd like to hear about your studio setup.

Ruben

Hey thanks, Ruben!

I record in an untreated living room with:

Cubase Studio 4 on a PC
Konnekt 24D interface
ART MPA Gold preamp
Gauge ECM-87 mic modified by Michael Joly at Oktavamod (K47-MJE suite)
Lots of plug-ins and often using the Chandler Abbey Road compressor/limiter
'72 Rickenbacker 4001 (burgundyglo! 8) )
'57 Reissue Stratocaster
Roland digital piano
Alvarez Yairi acoustic
...that's the bulk of it, plus a bunch of other stuff.

Thanks for asking!
