Kompoz.com is running a contest in collaboration w/Roger McGuinn where McGuinn has provided some raw tracks for the traditional “Take This Hammer” and is inviting musicians to add/rearrange new tracks to complete the song.

You can hear various contributions already sent in at the top of the web site. They range from the clever and sublime (swing version w/gospel backing) to the obvious (added guitar and harmony) to the moronic (robotic voice).
Some of you more talented players out there with a knack for multi-track recording (Mr. Todd Bradshaw, are you reading this?

) should definitely consider entering.
Entries must be submitted by December 7.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I have enough to do and don't think I can squeeze it it. I hope he does that again sometime.

Rats! You can't get in and just listen without entering the contest, or signing up for an account.

Yes, you can listen to the entries sent in so far without entering the contest or signing up for an account.
At the very top of the web page — right above the Kompoz logo — are the audio controls: pause/play, back and forward. By clicking the forward control (>>) you can skip ahead to the next version of the song.

Interesting. I might try one or two and see what I can come up with. Some of the submissions are pretty well done and show a lot of creativity. I did get a chuckle when the robot said "you might need this wrench, too". My only gripe is that Roger played it in his normal tuning, (dropped down a fret) and that means doing the same to any guitar that you want the ringing D and G chords on.

I should have posted this here instead of the recordings forum.....
I submitted an entry to the contest. I took the approach of trying to be as creative as I could, and not just add bass, drums, and keys to Roger's supplied tracks. Who knew..... I lost out to a wisecracking robot.
For my entry, I decided to write a song around his tracks, just bringing one of his choruses in (twice). It's not a typical song I'd write, but I wanted it to be as seamless a transition as possible. Two of my tracks are my 360/12, one dry and one using the JB2 for a faint Byrds-like flavor. I tried to flavor my vocals with hints of Roger's phrasing, pronunciation, and intonation. The song is a tribute to both Roger and his website, the Folk Den Project. In retrospect, I think that Roger wanted to hear his full tracks being used; not just pieces.
At least I can claim to have a done a duet with Roger (with asterisk).

Let me know what you think.........

I have to hand it to you, you really have Roger's vocal mannerisms down. That aside, I like the song on it's own merits.
