Hey all, does anyone have any sound clips for an A/B comparison between scatterwound toasters and hi-gains, for 300-series Ric 12-strings? I have toasters on my 360-12, but I do have a set of new, adjustable hi-gains, that I was considering trying on there. With the toasters, I often get an oscillating ringing from the B strings if they are fretted out of tune from one another, and the B strings are pretty hot through the toasters. I was thinking I could tame that with the new adjustable pick-ups. I thought I recalled a post about this awhile back. I appreciate any help, Steve-O.

i dont have any sound clips or the guitars anymore but once i had a 07 360/12fg with the new high gains and a 97 360/12v64jg with hot toasters and to me they sound about the same but i think the scatter toasters would sound better in a 12 string

The vast majority would stick with the toasters. I would try to cure the oscillation. Have you tried lowering the pickups?

Yes I have tried lowering the pickups, although I can try lowering them more. I think sloppy fretting is part of it for sure, of course I would be more precise if I could.

I yanked out the hi-gains and put a set of scatterwound toaters in my 330/12 FG. Oh, yeah!

I did the same thing and it was the best thing I could have done for my 330-12 FG. I learned I had to lower my amp volume a tad when switching from my Les Paul or Telecaster to the Rick, otherwise, I got screechy feedback. Once I did that, no problem.

Being the contrarian that I am, I think I'll stick with the high gains. If it ain't broke....

The new high gains sound great, you can get plenty of jangle out of them.

Actually, I made a YouTube video last weekend to address this very question.... I play the same riffs on my 360/12V64 with toasters, and my 360/12WB with high-gain pickups. I was honestly surprised at how close the two sounded when all was done--but the toasters are just a tad brighter sounding. But they both have that undeniable Rickenbacker sound. My playing is less than stellar (hate to say it, but it seems like forever since I've picked up a Ric 12, and my fingers were totally not used to the tighter spacing, LOL!) But you'll get the idea anyway.....
Melissa, what year is the V64, does it have scatter-wounds or hot toasters? Did you run those straight into the amp or through a JB? Nice comparison. Thanks.

Ken, my WB is a 1988, and my V64 was made in 1990. I'm honestly not sure whether the toasters are the hot ones or the scatterwounds--I really have no way of knowing, and have no techie skills at all....
I ran both guitars directly into the amp, on exactly the same settings, with no pedals or effects, in order to get the truest representation of how they sound side by side.
