Yo, Jdog...I recommend Army Navy stores...good reliable gear and usually reasonably priced. There are two in Tampa:

Army Navy Surplus Market Inc
1312 N Tampa St
Tampa FL 33602
(813) 229-2172

Headquarters Military Surplus Inc
1450 West Bearss Avenue
Tampa FL 33613
(813) 971-8805
http://www.headquartersarmynavy.com

Don't know if the Florida stores will have the variety of cold weather gear that the ones in Co. do...if they don't have what you need in stock, they may be able to order it for you. I used to shop at the one in downtown Anchorage...got me through three winters up there. (Recommendations: Navy 'Pea' coat with watch cap...Air Force Hooded Flight Parka...insulated Carhart stuff is really good, too...)

Buy yourself a Carhartt jacket such as a "Detroit jacket". Get it large enough to wear an insulated shirt or sweatshirt (over your regular shirt) under the jacket. This way you can layer if it gets too cold but you will still have a useful jacket for cooler Florida days.

Yeah, unless you are going to be out all day in arctic temperatures, layering is the thing to do. Sweatshirts, sweaters, etc. are great for warmth, then all you need is a jacket of some sort (Carhartt makes some great stuff) to stop the wind.

Of course, you Florida guys aren't at all used to cold weather, so you may just have to get a down parka to be able to stand it...

And how long did you have to search to find that?

Me and my buddy, "The Admiral":
Dane&Byrd_C.JPG
Everything I'm wearing in that shot (except for the 'Gubmint Issue' polar sunglasses) came from the A/N Surplus store in Anchorage. For the most part, I never had any trouble with the military personnel I worked with and around, but every now and then some 'FNG' 'butter bar' (junior-grade officer) would confront me in the chow hall and attempt to order me not to wear military gear. 'Whatever, dude', as the kids would say. One time, a friend of mine on the crew was riding the shuttle out to the airfield. A flight crew was on board with him...very obvious from their 'tailored' uniforms and the wings on the pilot's jacket. "So," says my pal to the pilot, making idle conversation, "what do you do down here?" The guy expands his chest and thumps it with his thumb: "I'm 'VXE-6' " (the official designation for the Navy Antarctic flight squadron)..."If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't be able to fly out of here." "Oh yeah?", says my buddy, "Well I'm civilian construction...if it wasn't for me, you'd be s*****n' out in the snow!" Ah, good times...

I kept that Air Force flight parka for several seasons...then I got invited one day to visit the cruise ship that had tied up to the Ice Pier. I put it on the back of a chair in the ornate brass-n-mahogany bar and went across the room to get a beer...when I came back it was gone...some zillionaire turista had stolen it for a 'souvenier'...

(You know, that electric underwear would have made for a much more pleasant field surveying experience...)

Military surplus = good option

North Face is a superb brand too... and the opposite gender seems to approve.

Safe travels.

I wear sweaters and sweater-vests in the winter. I know, I'm a geek.

There are some jackets on closeout here at very low prices. Actually their regular prices are decent for the quality of the clothing. http://www.aramark-uniform.com/Clearanc ... ducts.html
