Bassic Colors No. 15 – the full "Monte"

Montzuma Brown (MB) was the color of the year for TWO years, 2003 and '04. In '04, it shared COY duty with Blue Boy (next week). The one-year extension was probably a reflection of its popularity. The brown burst was a little "warmer" (redder) than the previous Autumnglo and Walnut bursts, but like them, it also varied quite a bit. My sample below, an '04, has a nice "iced tea" look to it, while others show a dark brown, almost black on the outer edges. I'll attach a shot of my 4003 and a 660/12 that I owned briefly to show the variations.
I don't know of any C64 basses that got the Monte treatment, but several (many?) 4004L and 4004C basses have received the warm MB bath. I shot Charlie Goehring's Monte Cheyenne at SoCalCon '07. So let's discuss and post pictures of Monte basses!

Probably my most of all favorite "burst" shade indeed. Anyone with an FL 4003 MB, send up a flare!

Hey John - I have another 4004cii (BBR) and I think that's enough (I can't believe I'm saying that!

). Also I've had my eye on another Rickenbacker bass and to make that happen the Monty 4004cii would have to be sold. If anyone is interested in the 4004cii MB, send me a PM.

They can with a heavier playing style. Sometimes not even so heavy. But it was something I just was always aware of in my playing and sounded better with them in place rather than hex screws. For the most part, if I remained less animated on stage and kept my mind on playing, it wasn't an issue.
But, she's in Jeff Rath's hands now, so I'm not sure what he ultimately might have done differently.
