Were the shorter klusons used on vintage 12's?

Ric sells two kinds of RIC Deluxe tuners... short and long shaft. Were the shorter shafts ever used on the vintage 12 strings, or the c63? Or have 12's always had a thicker headstock for the longer tuners, and more stability?
